Hot heated new ones who has more going on

Why am I limited to 5 stars?? I need at least 10 to rate this book!

Obviously I loved it! I've liked Coach Bass from the previous books in the series and his story is phenomenal! My favorite so far...which is saying A LOT because I didn't know if Jean could top Buddy and Emmy's story. This book can be read as a stand alone eventhough it is part of a series.

Once again the characters are well-written and complex. Coach Bass is so great with his team and is overall just a good guy. But there were a couple of times that I wanted to smack him in the back of the head to knock some sense into him. And Jo...I really like how she's worked her way up in a man's world, but she's made sacrifices along the way. I wanted to smack her upside the head at a couple of times too. Adding in Pete's twin girls endeared him even more to me too (I have twins of my own...) They provided for getting know both Pete and Josie better. And both of the main characters grew so much over the story

The supporting characters all help move the story along as well. We know Griff/Lauren and Buddy/Emmy from the previous books and have been through their trials with them. So it's nice to see them in a different capacity in this book. Again the guys on the team help the main character grow and give you a different side to them. The scenes with Pete and his team really solidify that he's a rock solid man, no matter what is going on.

The descriptions of the games had me on the edge of my seat. I'm one of those people who yell at the TV during football games (don't judge lol) and I found myself doing the same thing in this book! I couldn't read fast enough to figure out how the game was going to end. But the sex scenes...wow! I did NOT want those to end. HOT HOT HOT!

So now can you see why I need more stars?? LOL

Jean is amazing and I don't know how she does it! She not only scored with this installment of the First and Ten series, she scored a TOUCHDOWN! Loved that we were able to hear how the previous Kings we have met are doing. Coach Pete is such a great guy, even though there were times I wanted to smack him upside the head. Jo enters the picture and there are such great scenes with them I could not stop reading this to see if they would both get their acts together! They both have their own issues to work through and they are so well written I feel like I know them. All of Jean's characters are like that and I would love to hang out with the characters! Heck, I would love to hang out with Jean too! She is so talented. From pugs to Hollywood to football, Jean can write some amazing stories!!! Keep them coming Jean!!!

The record was replete with references to babies, childbirth, and reproduction (the album’s very title means "in the womb"); witch hunts, the loss of privacy, illness and disease, and ambivalence about fame. The songs expressed a heartfelt anguish that would later cause some to interpret the entire album as a cry for help, but even at the time of its release In Utero could easily be read as an album focused on physical and spiritual sickness. Rather than being overwhelmed by circumstances, however, Cobain’s songs on In Utero show him – for the most part – still able and willing to fight back. As such, among Nirvana’s recorded efforts, it stands as Cobain’s most personal work.

This book was alright. I felt like it was a little disjointed in how it covered the album. I was hoping it would be a chapter covering each song on the album but it was not written that way at all. Gaar discusses the creation of some of the songs and than the recording of the songs. She interviews the producers, record executives, members of Nirvana and gathers quotes by Kurt Cobain from interviews done at the time. There is a chapter that covers the creation of the art work that is interesting.

Over all I don't really think I got a better understanding of the Nirvana or their recording process from this book.

One of the best books in this series

A great read. The author avoids over-analysis of Kurt's lyrics, which has become so prevalent in the wake of his death. Instead, she focuses on the details of the songs-namely, when they were written (or a best approximation) and first recorded, the multiple recording sessions where these songs were first recorded before the "In Utero" recordings, and to-the-point analysis of the "In Utero" sessions. I've read a lot about the recording of this album but was very impressed with her practical day-to-day recounting of the sessions. The book is as bare-bones as the album itself, and makes for a great read. If you're looking for an impassioned interpretation of Kurt's songs, look elsewhere, but if you want a nuts-and-bolts dissection of this album, pick this book up.

Organized collection of Information.

Great Read, there are lots of tidbits that have come out over the years organized for you to make sense out of. There are several previously points that are clarified as the author did a thorough job researching the ambiguous nuggets of information and rumors floating about. She interviewed those in the know close to the band, members of the band, as well as renowned experts in the field of live recordings and concerts. Is everything in this book a revelation? No, but with Nirvana existence 12 years in the past and with all session and demo information that we've learned about over the years, the constant expectation of something groundbreaking and new is probably going to leave you disappointed more often than not. There is some new info, yes. Did I buy it for that? No, not at all. Personally, I like hearing information that we've known presented in a nice, organized, and well written fashion as much as (if not more than) new information. The new stuff is just icing on the cake. Great job on the book, Gillian. I hope that you continue to share Nirvana with us in all the various ways you have already.

For anyone interested in Scottish history or genealogy, this book is a must. Extensively researched; it documents the historic residencies and holdings of even some of the more obscure Clans and families. Pictures and drawings embellish the readable text.

This book gives information of what I needed to know for the books that I write. It came in good condition (with a few dogears, but that doesn't matter). It gives information of where the clans lived, and usually shows pictures of the castles, which is what I needed for my books.

Mostly good arrangements of all songs from '25'

In general, this book is about what you would expect: it contains piano transcriptions of every song from 25, along with the vocal line and guitar chords. Like much of Adele's music, most songs on this album are quite piano-heavy, so I had high hopes for the transcriptions being authentic. Mostly, this is true. For example, "All I Ask" is absolutely beautiful and sounds almost spot-on to the album recording. It is my favorite piece from both the album and this book, and you won't be disappointed with it. "When We Were Young" is decent, but when the album recording has both the piano and bass, the transcription in this book has only the piano part--you're missing the little bass runs that I think make the song a bit more exciting (and, no matter how stunningly performed the song may be, the instrumentals are very simple and you can probably do just as good as this transcription just by looking at the chord progression and faking it if you don't care about the bass; I was able to find a transcription I liked better as a digital download on a well-known online sheet music store). Finally, her first hit from the album, "Hello," is quite poorly transcribed if you're just looking for the accompaniment: on this piece, they decided to put the melody into the piano part. It's mostly easy ignore if you're a capable enough player to filter it out, but to play it like that requires more effort and ruins what could have otherwise been a great transcription of a beautiful song. Finally, there are a couple songs that just don't work as well on the piano (ones without a prominent piano part in the album itself), but I wasn't as interested in those anyway.

I'm deducting one star for the aforementioned reasons: some otherwise good transcriptions are mysteriously missing something that would make them more authentic, and some "accompaniment" lines are transcribed with the melody (but at least the whole book doesn't consistently do that). In general, the book is well done, and it does include all songs from the album with reasonably good transcriptions of most of them.

Note to the publishers: Please let us look inside the book before we buy! It's so hard to judge if the music is at your level before even looking at it. I'm disappointed that many of these songs are a bit above my intermediate skill level. I would have easily known that by looking through the pages for 2 minutes.

The easiest songs to play are "Sweetest Devotion" in the key of C, and "Send my Love" in the key of D. If you are like me, and aren't going to spend a lot of time practicing the more difficult songs, I would buy those separately.

The arrangements were done in a way that an intermediate player such as myself could enjoy the music, though I believe an advanced player would enjoy the songs as well. Though I can't say I'm a rabid fan to the point of buying concert tickets in the first 10 minutes before they're sold out, I do appreciate the beauty of her music, and this another way that I'm able to enjoy it.

...still so cunning and free, still makes the sign of the "Z"...

Before Batman and even before the Shadow ran around in dark spooky clothes, the Curse of Capistrano roamed Old California on his fiery black steed Toronado, upholding justice and tweaking the noses of the corrupt Alcalde and his brutal soldados. Having endured for nearly a century now, El Zorro has been brought to life in various mediums, my favorite reiteration being the 1940 film The Mark of Zorro (Special Edition) (Colorized / Black and White) with Tyrone Power. And I just have to throw in this interesting (I think) trivia: THE MARK OF ZORRO happens to be the picture young Bruce Wayne went to see with his parents on the night of their murders. Just a further illustration of Zorro's impact on the Dark Knight. But moving on...

I don't know how long they can keep it up, but I'm very glad that Dynamite Entertainment is publishing a comic book series each about the Lone Ranger and Zorro, two childhood icons of mine. Folks my age will recall that these two (and Tarzan) were featured in a Saturday cartoon series on CBS back in the '80s, although each starred in his own respective set of episodes. And, with the Eisner Award-nominated The Lone Ranger trade paperback garnering critical success, it makes sense that Zorro next gets a shot at his own comic book. And with Matt Wagner coming on board as writer and art director, things are promising.

ZORRO Vol. 1: YEAR ONE: TRAIL OF THE FOX collects the first eight issues and serves as the origin arc of Zorro. Matt Wagner doesn't reinvent the character as much as adapt elements not only from creator Johnston McCulley's THE CURSE OF CAPISTRANO (The Mark of Zorro (Townsend Library Edition)) but also from Isabel Allende's 2005 Zorro: A Novel (P.S.) (which is intended as a prequel to McCulley's 1919 novella). It's important to note that, in giving a nod to Allende's source material, Wagner presents us with a more fleshed-out Don Diego de la Vega.

Although raised as a noble gentleman, a "caballero," Diego is half-Spaniard and half-Native American. Even as his father steeped him into the hidalgo heritage, his mother taught him the ways of her people, the Tongva tribe. And, even as a child, Diego had observed the rampant cruelty taking place around him. So, unlike in the films, it doesn't take Diego's coming home from his studies abroad for him to take note of the injustices being inflicted on his people. For Diego de la Vega, in this reality, the resentment's been building for some time. Of the dual impersonations he takes on, the guise of the lethargic fop is actually the one deemed the more challenging.

Matt Wagner's main story arc revolves around Diego's youth and the things he learns and his sometimes harrowing experiences at home and then abroad. All this will mold him into the legendary figure he'll later become. And, along the way, we learn nifty things like why Diego chooses the sobriquet of El Zorro, the logic behind the cloak (not a cape) in his alter ego's costume, and who Diego patterned his dandy act after. With Diego is his constant companion and milk brother Bernardo, rendered mute by a tragic event. This story arc is narrated by Bernardo, and this works because his perspective is removed enough from the central character that it allows an aura of legend and myth to be fostered. And yet Bernardo, as Diego's best friend, is close enough that he lends insights into the underpinnings of the Zorro mythos.

These eight issues make up what is basically a flashback story. Interspersed occasionally are scenes which take place in the present, as Zorro begins to bedevil the oppressors. When you hear the increasingly frustratred Alcalde burst out with "Madre de Dios y todos los Santos! That bastard!" - that means that the fiendish El Zorro's been up to his tricks again. Although, on the action sequence meter, he doesn't really do that much. He just pops up here and there, being a smirky thorn in the side, slowly building up his rep and his legend. But, under Wagner's expert storytelling, it makes for an engrossing read.

In his essence, this version of Zorro stays true. Zorro still demonstrates a panache, an exuberance. He still relishes mocking the soldados and, especially, Sergeant Gonzales, his constant foil . Still a master swordsman, still carves that "Z" with his sword, still flourishes that bullwhip. But certain other things have been tweaked, in addition to Diego's origin. I think we've been conditioned by cinema to seeing Sergeant Gonzales (or Garcia) as this obese, dimwitted bumbler. But Wagner reverts the sergeant to his brutal nature, the way he was originally depicted in THE CURSE OF CAPISTRANO. And, like Alain Delon's take, there's no mustache on this El Zorro, Wagner intending our hero to exude a more youthful vibe. Also, Wagner has Zorro operating strictly during nighttime, else the black get-up wouldn't make sense and it'd be really stifling under the scorching Alta California sun.

Bonus stuff off this trade paperback includes: a cover gallery featuring artists Matt Wagner, John Cassaday, Mike Mayhew, and Ryan Sook; character designs and sketches by Matt Wagner; and a Matt Wagner interview. Speaking of art, Italian artist Francesco Francavilla's style won't make your eyes pop out, but it's serviceable enough and evokes the time and atmosphere of Old California. Matt Wagner provides cover artwork for the original issues, and these covers whetted my appetite enough that I wonder how he would've fared if he'd handled the interior pencils and inks, as well.

Okay, I'm about to get nitpicky. Living in Southern Cali, I've picked up a smattering of Spanish, so I couldn't help but notice that there was a fair amount of cussing in Spanish. To me, that's actually pretty cool and it lends a certain edgy realism to the story. But where Wagner loses a few points is in his incorrect usage of the Spanish language (ie: he drops in "Buenos noches" instead of "Buenas noches"; "La �guila" instead of "El �guila"). These little snafus are few and far between, and I'm not that familiar with Spanish, but I'm familiar enough that these gringo-isms did jar my immersion into the story. Of course, if you don't know Spanish, then it's not an issue.

Either way, Matt Wagner's ZORRO is recommended, for those who dig old-fashioned heroism, swashbuckling adventure, and a playful masked rogue putting it over the Man. Check this out, too, if you're curious about the parallels between Batman and Zorro. And, with Bruce Wayne having drawn so much inspiration from Don Diego, then I guess it's only proper that Zorro encroach into Batman's original comic book medium. But lest I give too much credit to Zorro's "been there, done that first" pedigree, Diego de la Vega's own foppish act was first done by the Scarlet Pimpernel. That, of course, doesn't change the fact that you should give Zorro a chance. And, while you're at it, THE LONE RANGER, as well.

A Wonderful Addition to the Zorro Mythos, even with typos

I just finished reading this first trade of Zorro. I have to say it reads much better in one book, than issue to issue. There is a lot of back story in this first trade to get through, so it takes a while for things to really move. But when they do movie, its well worth it!
I'm a huge fan of Zorro, owning just about anything I can get my hands on. This story draws from movies like Mask of Zorro, to the books of Johnston McCulley and Isabel Allende; making a coherent addition. I really enjoy where this book is leading us, Zorro definitely is my gem of my comic pull-box at my local shop.

I do have a few gripes though. For starters, there are some Spanish errors. Its Buenas noches, not Buenos noches. Cabr�nes, not Cabr�ns. Matt Wagner also seems to lay it on thick with the Spanish swearing, I felt like he picked up a Spanish slang book and just overloaded the dialogue at times. At one point pinche is used by a Spanish soldier, and I don't think the Spanish use it; its Mexican slang. My recommendation would be to have someone who speaks Spanish edit this before it gets a print in future issues.

If you are new to Zorro, this easily brings you into the fold. If you are a long time fan, particularly a fan of Allende's novel, you will also be at home. Enjoy!

Tyrone Would be Proud

I'm a huge fan of Tyrone Powers take on the Fox. I have been reading the monthly Dynamite comic that Mr Wagner does. It is INCREDIBLE !!! As with the Lone Ranger Dynamite has brought back a fan fave and keeps enough of the past yet makes it part of the present.As I write this we are up to issue 12. The First 7 issues are a wonderfully well thought out tribute to the origin of the Masked avenger.The writing is top notch. The art is top notch.If I was told I had to stop reading all comics but one. Zorro would be the book I'd stay with, it's superb. Check It out ;)

The Lone Ranger AND TONTO Ride Again

There is no better opening to a television series than that of the Lone Ranger from the 1950s. And Clayton Moore was the Lone Ranger, enhancing the creation of George W. Trendle and writer Fran Striker'sseminal radio series. I wasn't thrilled by what I have seen of the pre-war "serials". When I looked again at the Clayton Moore Lone Ranger series as an adult I noticed two things I hadn't as a child: very poor production values (due to budgetary reasons) and it was uncomfortably preachy. However I thought what he had to preach was good stuff; and as a kid, I never noticed either aspect. I eagerly awaited 1981's THE LEGEND OF THE LONE RANGER WITH Klinton Spilsbury's body and James Keach's voice. I loved the colors, scenery and costumes [Even as a kid I thought the lone ranger "tights" were a little weird for cowboys]. I wasn't too crazy about the plot and especially didn't like the periodic "chorus"/song, a device which did not enhance 4-Oscar winning High Noon (although away from the movie I liked the song) and certainly didn't help the Legend any.
Now there is "Disney's" The Lone Ranger coming out July 3rd. I've read some very good articles, bought all the LEGOs and have enjoyed the previews. I confess Tonto's headgear is rather strange. I can live with that. However placing the "Legend" into a "buddy-comedy" genre doesn't help the legend much. Again, even as a kid, I thought they could have given Tonto a better role. Jay Silverheels was great as Tonto but rather underused. Now there is a welcomed greater focus on Tonto but I suspect the part he plays has not the enhancing that Clayton Moore and/or Jay Silverheels would appreciate. I think it will be a great summer movie--western scenery, lots of 19th Century trains, and the interaction of the characters. I just think copyright holders and renters downgraded the "legend". I will definitely see the movie and I hope you will too. I also hope that William Tell will be there but I'm not betting on it.

Now, from the script (by several people, oft revised) Elizabeth Rudnick (author of 2010's teen novel Tweet Heart) has crafted a novelization. Upon seeing it, I bought it as a companion for a train trip. Read it in a day--and while I had to put it down periodically, I eagerly picked it back up! It's great. It seemed fresh, interesting, and having seen images of the Ranger and Tonto, I could picture the whole story. Usually one doesn't expect too much from novelizations (I personally thought the STAR WARS first trilogy novelizations were rather wooden). But Ms. Rudnick does quite well: just the right tone, just the right detail. Thanks very much! If you like the movie, get the book. Even if you don't see the movie, get the book as well.

I love the lone ranger. You should go see the movie. It looks cool. My 1 dislike about this book It says a bad word. But other than that I loved the book.

Spaghetti western! High oh Silver away!

I liked how there was always a problem Tonto and the Lone Ranger had to face. They worked as a team to figure out a solution. It was exciting and worth while to read. It reminded me of the tv series.

About the Author

Shawn Wong is the author of the novel American Knees and an editor of several anthologies of Asian American literature, including Aiiieeeee! and The Big Aiiieeeee!. His work has been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts creative writing fellowship and numerous other prizes. He is professor of English at the University of Washington, Seattle.

such an important book to read.....

I was assigned to read HOMEBASE by Rainsford Chan in a American Ethnic Studies comparative literature course and I was so glad that I did! The author, Professor Wong, who was the head of the English department at the University of Washington, gives the Chinese Exclusion Act and the generations who followed it a face, a name and a story. Rainsford Chan, the main character, bridges three generations as he takes a look back at his identity as a Chinese-American in an adverse culture that will not accept him as truly "American" because of his Eastern features, the color of his skin and his last name. Though, his great-grandfather literally helped to build America, while constructing the Trans-Pacific railroad, Chan still feels he has no real place amongst the Whites who continue to question his authenticity.
Wong's style is intense, poetic and frank. This novel also brings up very important and timely points about cultural and social identity, and the connection between men, their fathers and the legacy they carry on even three generations down the line. Rainsford excels in American sports, earns a letterman jacket and must become the "man" in the family after his father dies, and also helps his mother in her flower shop. The duties of manhood and caring for his family are part of his identity that he must live up to, as well as the pressure of justifying his "American-ness" to everyone who insists he must be from Hong Kong. Even though he comes from the "home where the buffalos roam." Such an important book for anyone interested in cultural identity in the United States, and for those who are still struggling for fair treatment in a White world.

Rainsford Chan: A Man of Myth

I think that this book is an extremely introspective piece about a young Chinese American boy who is discovering the balance between the Chinese heritage he has denied his entire life, as well as the American that he could never be. Wong's poetic nature surfaces in this prose through his lilting descriptions that disclose the connection Rainsford seeks to find between his heritage and this country who was so unaccepting of Chinese immigrants, and how possibly the nature of society has never really changed no matter how hard he tries just as his ancestors did.

Touching Story Not Often Heard

Shawn Wong's homebase deals with a topic not widely discussed in literature. The author's early work (before American Knees) delves into his relationship between his father and heritage. the lesson I walked away was that by looking back at your heritage, you always can find a place you can call home. Whether it is in your family or friends, there is a special place you can go when you are seeking solace from the outside world. The language is magnificent and he has a strong writting style which draws you into his stories.
