Preface Who Should Use This Book?

The topics covered and the approach taken in this book are suitable for a typical depthfirst Introduction to Computer Science (CS1) course or for a slightly more advanced Java as a Second Language course. The book is also useful to professional programmers making the transition to Java and object-oriented programming.

The book takes an "objects first" approach to programming and problem solving. It assumes no previous programming experience and requires no prior knowledge of Java or object-oriented programming. Why Start with Objects?

Java, Java, Java takes an "objects early" approach to teaching Java, with the assumption that teaching beginners the "big picture" early gives them more time to master the principles of object-oriented programming.

The first time I taught Java in our CS1 course I followed the same approach I had been taking in teaching C and C++ - namely, start with the basic language features and structured programming concepts and then, somewhere around midterm, introduce object orientation. This approach was familiar, for it was one taken in most of the textbooks then available in both Java and C++.

One problem with this approach was that many students failed to get the big picture. They could understand loops, if-else constructs, and arithmetic expressions, but they had difficulty decomposing a programming problem into a well organized Java program. Also, it seemed that this procedural approach failed to take advantage of the strengths of Java's object orientation. Why teach an object-oriented language if you're going to treat it like C or Pascal?

I was reminded of a similar situation that existed when Pascal was the predominant CS1 language. Back then the main hurdle for beginners was procedural abstraction - learning the basic mechanisms of procedure call and parameter passing and learning how to design programs as a collection procedures. Oh! Pascal!, my favorite introductory text, was typical of a "procedures early" approach. It covered procedures and parameters in Chapter 2, right after covering the assignment and I/O constructs in Chapter 1. It then covered program design and organization in Chapter 3. It didn't get into loops, if-else, and other structured programming concepts until chapter 4 and beyond.

Presently, the main hurdle for beginners is object abstraction. Beginning programmers must be able to see a program as a collection of interacting objects and must learn how to decompose programming problems into well designed objects. Object orientation subsumes both procedural abstraction and structured programming concepts from the Pascal days. Teaching "objects early" takes a top-down approach to these three important concepts. The sooner you begin to introduce objects and classes, the better the chances that students will master the important principles of object orientation.

Object Orientation (OO) is a fundamental problem solving and design concept, not just another language detail that should be relegated to the middle or the end of the book (or course). If OO concepts are introduced late, it is much too easy to skip over them when push comes to shove in the course.

Java is a good language for introducing object orientation. Its object model is better organized than C++. In C++ it is easy to "work around" or completely ignore OO features and treat the language like C. In Java there are good opportunities for motivating the discussion of object orientation. For example, it's almost impossible to discuss applets without discussing inheritance and polymorphism. Thus rather than using contrived examples of 00 concepts, instructors can use some of Java's basic features applets, the class library, GUI components - to motivate these discussions in a natural way. Key Features

In addition to its objects early approach, this book has several other important features.

The CyberPet Example. Throughout the text a CyberPet class is used as a running example to motivate and illustrate important concepts. The CyberPet is introduced in Chapter 2, as a way of "anthropomorphizing" the basic features of objects. Thus individual CyberPets belong to a class (definition), have a certain state (instance variables), and are capable of certain behaviors like eating and sleeping (instance methods). Method calls are used to command the CyberPets to eat and sleep. In Chapter 3 the emphasis is on defining and using methods and parameters to promote communication with Cyberpets. In subsequent chapters, concepts such as inheritance, randomness, animation, and threads are illustrated in terms of the CyberPet. Some of the lab and programming exercises are also centered around extending the behavior and sophistication of the CyberPet.

Applets and GUIs. Applets and GUIs are first introduced in Chapter 4 and then used throughout the rest of the text. Clearly, applets are a "turn on" for introductory students and can be used as a good motivating factor. Plus, event-driven programming and Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) are what students ought now to be learning in CS1. We are j long past the days when command-line interfaces were the norm in applications programming. Another nice thing about Java applets is that they are fundamentally object oriented. To understand them fully; students need to understand basic OO concepts. That's why applets are not introduced until Chapter 4, where they provide an excellent way to motivate the discussion of inheritance and polymorphism.

Companion Web Site. The text is designed to be used in conjunction with a companion Web site that includes many useful resources, including the Java code and Java documentation (in HTML) for all the examples in the text, additional lab and programming assignments, on-line quizzes that can be scored automatically, and PowerPoint class notes. Problem Solving Approach. A pedagogical, problem solving approach is taken throughout the text. There are total of 13 fully developed case studies, as well as numerous other examples that illustrate the problem solving process. Marginal notes in the text repeatedly emphasize the basic elements of object-oriented problem solving: What objects do we need? What methods and data do we need? What algorithm should we use? And so on. Self-study Exercises. The book contains more than 200 self-study exercises, with answers provided at the back of each chapter. End-of-Chapter Exercises. Over 400 end-of-chapter exercises are provided, including "Challenge" exercises at the end of most sets. The answers are provided in an Instructor's Manual, which is available to adopters. Programming, Debugging and Design Tips. The book contains nearly 400 separately identified "tips" (Programming Tips, Debugging Tips, Effective Design Principles, and Java Language Rules) that provide useful programming and design information in a nutshell. Laboratory Sections. Each chapter concludes with a laboratory exercise, so the text can easily be used to support lab-based CS1 courses (such as ours). For CS1 courses that are not lab-based, these sections can still be read as preparation for a programming assignment. For each lab in the text, the companion Web site contains additional resources and handouts, as well as a repository of alternative lab assignments. From the Library Sections. Each chapter includes a section that introduces one or more of the library classes from the Java API (Application Programming Interface). In the early chapters these sections provide a way of introducing tools, such as I/O classes and methods, needed to write simple programs. In subsequent chapters, some of these sections introduce useful but optional topics, such as the NumberFormat class used to format numeric output. Others introduce basic GUI (Graphical User Interface) components that are used in program examples and the laboratory sections. Object-Oriented Design Sections. Each chapter includes a section on Object-Oriented Design which is used to underscore and amplify important principles such as inheritance, polymorphism, and information hiding. Java Language Summary. Those chapters that introduce language features contain Java Language Summary sections that summarize the feature's essential syntax and semantics. Organization of the Text

The book is organized into three main parts. The first part (Chapters 0 through 4) introduces the basic concepts of object orientation, including objects, classes, methods, parameter passing, information hiding, inheritance, and polymorphism. Although the primary focus in these chapters is on object orientation, rather than Java language details, each of these chapters has a Java Language Summary section that summarizes the language elements introduced.

In Chapters 1 to 3 students are given the basic building blocks for constructing a Java program from scratch. Although the programs at this stage have limited functionality in terms of control structures and data types, the priority is placed on how objects are constructed and how they interact with each other through method calls and parameter passing.

Now that's bad quality!

I bought this book for a Java programming class that I was taking. Upon opening the book to chapter 4, the glue in the binding broke with a loud snap, and the book now sits as if it's two books tethered together with a paper cover. I opened the book to a later chapter (probably around chapter 6?) and the glue in the binding snapped again! Now it's like I have three books tethered together by a paper cover. Later, I flipped to a chapter a few after 6, and the binding broke once again, so now I have an even bigger mess. I highly recommend that you avoid this book if possible. What a rip off.

Excellent as a Text Book

It is very clear that the authors of this book have taught the subject many times and have shared their sucessful approaches and experiences with us via the book. The concepts build nicely throughout the book and the examples build in complexity as well. I particularly apreciated the optional sections covering graphical user interfaces in the early chapters. The early introduction of Object Orientation is a plus as well. Because the book provides a great deal of detail, it is an excellent compliment to lectures and assignments in a beginning Java course.

Laugh Out Loud, Cry, then Laugh Again

Offered here is a compilation of many brief yet impacting memories of a listeners' life. The introductory character is an NPR program host, tiring of narrating his own writing; thus, putting out a call to all of his listeners to share the single, most important memory of their lives. Additionally, this host promises, to read each and every narrative received.

Within a week of broadcasting, several hundred responses flood the NPR studio with no promise of ending.

Comprised within related chapters, the personal narratives are abridged in length: a mere one to perhaps three or four pages. The elicited emotions might include:a laugh out loud or due to the start of the next vignette, a shock of tears. Simple, heartfelt nuggets of abbreviated writing shared by folks as diverse as you and me.

Essential for all fans

I've been a Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) fan for many years. While I'm rather partial to a certain young Earl, I find all the characters quite intriguing and fascinating, so it's natural that I would enjoy this collection of art featuring Ciel, Sebastian, and the rest of the gang, all illustrated by the original artist, Yana Toboso. Also included are some illustrations of her first work (which nobody even remembers, sadly) called Rust Blaster, as well as a few other pieces.

The volume, which is much too short for my preferences, features glossy, full-color pages filled with spreads and covers of primarily Bocchan, Sebaschan, though several also feature Grell and the other minor characters. At the end of the book, Toboso-sensei includes a small commentary on each of the pieces. The hardbound book includes two small bookmarks, one attached to each cover, as well. In traditional Japanese style, the book reads from right to left, though it doesn't much matter as the contents are entirely visual.

Any fan of the series, and especially those who have a love for Sebastian and Ciel, really owe it to themselves to pick up this volume. I believe in supporting the artists and authors whose works I find enjoyable, and your purchase of this work also helps to do that. This is a beautiful book that will be a part of my collection for many years to come, and I'm certainly hoping for a second volume (and a third, and....)!

The book itself was amazing...however...

The book was fantastic. Has wonderful art from the manga...!!! Simply Beautiful! However the book arrived with no protective bubble wrap or anything...so it came dented and scratched. The metallic embellishment was scratched and coming off. I give it two stars for the poor condition it arrived in although it was supposed to be new. I like my books in new condition, not slightly used.

The book came in a flat carton brown box with a thin plastic wrapper.
I bough it used and it came like new! The pictures are gorgeous!

*Starred Review* Alsenas’ landmark history of American gay life focuses largely on public attitudes toward homosexuality and the seemingly endless struggle for gay rights. After a brief survey covering pre–twentieth-century America, Alsenas narrows his focus to offer a closer examination of more recent events. Thus, Chapter Two deals with the period 1910–39; Chapter Three, with 1940–59; and so on until the final chapter brings the reader to the present—and beyond. In an effort to humanize his material, the author begins each chapter with an individual story told from a personalized (i.e., lightly fictionalized) point of view. While this succeeds in dramatizing factual material, the effort may be unnecessary, since the epic story the author tells of the gradual emergence of gays and lesbians from the shadows is itself a compellingly human drama. Alsenas’ often sprightly, always engaging style makes his history even more reader-friendly, as do the many archival photographs that enliven each page. About the Author

Linas Alsenas, originally from Cleveland, Ohio, studied art history at Harvard University, where he was introduced to queer studies. After graduation, he worked for a year as an editor at a design magazine before embarking on his career in book publishing, in which he worked on The Art of Maurice Sendak: 1980 to Present, by award-winning playwright Tony Kushner, and Male Desire: The Homoerotic in American Art, by noted art historian Jonathan Weinberg, and many children’s books. Linas is a US citizen who lives with his partner in Stockholm, Sweden.

Exceptional history.

As someone who has been a gay activist for 30+ years, this is a welcome and engaging book. The design of the book, images, and white space is particularly suited to teenagers. The writing is accessible and neutral in tone. This is an excellent choice for libraries and for discussion groups. I recommend giving this book to your local libraries, youth centers, LGBT centers, anywhere that teens might be looking for LGBT information. I clearly remember the first LGBT reading list published by the American Library Association that was all of 1 page. Barbara Gittings was the editor and one of the hero's mentioned in this book. I hope to meet the author should he come to the SF Bay Area for a reading.

This book is absolutly amazing! I dont read alot but i have started reading books involving gay rights to further educate myself on the issues effecting my dearest friends. This book goes over everthing! It answered so many questions i had. i will be sharing this book with many people and encourage everyone to read it gay or straight.

This book, Gay America, written by Alsenas is a wonderful history of our struggle with equality as well as noting the great accomplishments for our LBGT community. The book itself is put together very well with a very nice front cover that would make it look great on an teen, or adult's bookshelf, or coffeetable. Kudos to Alsenas for this book!!!!

About the Author

Alec M. Pridgeon is Sainsbury Orchid Fellow of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He is a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London; Research Associate of the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida; member of the Orchid Committee and Orchid Registration Advisory Committee of the Royal Horticultural Society. In orchid circles he is perhaps best known as past Editor of the American Orchid Society Bulletin (now titled Orchids) and Founding Editor of the scientific orchid journal, Lindleyana. He has written or co-written 50 scientific articles or book chapters and 90 popular articles, co-written and co-directed five videotapes, edited 11 books including the Proceedings of the 14th World Orchid Conference and The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Orchids, and compiled the Orchid Action Plan for the Species Survival Commission of the IUCN in Geneva. Phillip Cribb is currently Deputy Keeper of the Herbarium and Curator of the Orchid Herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He has specialized in the taxonomy of Old World tropical orchids, participating in many expeditions to study orchids in the field. He is the author of several books and over 350 papers on orchids and is co-editor of the Orchid Research Newsletter. He has been a member of the Royal Horticultural Society's Orchid Committee for over 20 years, an executive member of the International Orchid Commission, and currently chairs the IUCN/Species Survival Commission's Orchid Specialist Group, which publishes Orchid Conservation News. He was recently awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Westonbirt Medal for his work on orchids.

Mark W. Chase is the Head of the Molecular Systematics Section of the Jodrell Laboratory at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He has received the Cooley Award from the American Society of Plant Taxonomists, the Rolf Dalhgren Prize from by the Royal Physiographic Society of Lund (Sweden), the Linnean Medal for Botany from the Linnean Society of London, and an ICI/Current Contents award for being one of the top 15 most-cited authors in the fields of agriculture and plant and animals sciences (1991-2001); he holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Uppsala (Sweden) and is a Visiting Professor in the School of Biological Sciences, Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London and member of the Orchid Committee of the Royal Horticultural Society. Finn N. Rasmussen is Associate Professor at the Botanical Institute, University of Copenhagen. He is a member of The Orchid Specialist Group of the Species Survival Commission of the IUCN, the Society of
Systematic Biologists, Botanical Society of America, and Dansk Botanisk Forening.

About the Author
Sally Fallon read Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston Price in 1973 and raised her four children according to the nutritional principles of healthy, non-industrialized peoples, with plenty of butter, cream, meat, seafood, whole raw milk, and cod liver oil. In 1996, in order to put the principles of Weston Price into practical form, she published Nourishing Traditions, a full-spectrum nutritional cookbook, with Mary Enig, Ph.D. Later, she founded A Campaign for Real Milk, whose goal is universal access to clean, raw milk products. In 1999, she became founding president of the Weston A. Price Foundation. She is editor of the quarterly, Wise Traditions, and leads seminars on traditional diets throughout the U.S. and internationally. She lives in Washington DC.

A God-sent

I found this book through the book "The Maker's Diet" which was given to me when I was 18 and sat on a shelf to be picked up 2 years later after the birth of my first child. I was struggling to breastfeed after having a major loss of blood (OBGYN's mistake led to this and a major birth trauma). I had virtually no milk supply. Tried everything! Persevered for 6 horrible long exhausting weeks before I finally gave up. I did not even become engorged upon stopping, that's how low my supply was. Looking back now i was very malnourished from a terrible diet of fast food and soda during pregnancy, plus the major loss of blood after birth- there's no way my body could produce anything. My teeth were crumbling, horrible cavities everywhere. I was very much against infant formula but I had no other choice, so i started my son of Enfamil. He was colicky, constipated, constant projectile spit up, not sleeping well, and I was DEPRESSED. I was even having to use infant suppositories for him. This is NOT NORMAL!! No matter how common it is, it's not normal...
I began reading a lot to try and help keep my mind off of the deep depression I was experiencing (Lack of sleep, stress of being a young new wife and mother, no family in the area, plus my very unhealthy and hormone depleted body). Then, one day I came across the book that I had placed on a shelf two years prior (The Maker's Diet- a great book). When I started reading through some of the recipes, I noticed many of them were referencing this book called "Nourishing Traditions". I went to Barnes and Noble and bought this book the same week. Instantly saw how informative it was and how packed with recipes! I love it!! It opened my life to a completely new way of thinking/eating/ living. One of the first recipes i came across was the infant formula recipe. I thanked God because I knew he led me there, as I had PRAYED and cried out to God to help me find some way to feed my baby, and in the midst of feeling like such a massive failure for not being able to nurse my son, I realized that God had used my dad to give me The Maker's Diet, which I would pick up two years later out of desperation, which would in turn lead me to Nourishing Traditions... Long story short, I used the website provided in the book to scout out a source of raw milk locally, and within that week I found a raw milk cow share and signed up, and ordered all of the ingredients that I needed and started making my son's formula. From the first feeding, he was a much happier baby! He stopped fussing so much, he started SLEEPING through the night, AND he was NEVER AGAIN constipated! His bowel movements turned to mustard yellow, seedy, soft just as they were when I was nursing him.
Fast forward to two years later and having completely embraced the Nourishing Traditions lifestyle, my husband and I decided to try for a second child. This pregnancy went much differently. I took care of myself, the nourishing traditions way. I drank superfood green smoothies every single day with home made raw milk kefir, ate healthy (not 100%, but I tried to give my body everything it needed!), plenty of butter and coconut oil and eggs, took whole food supplements and herbs instead of synthetic pharmaceutical prenatals, and never once saw a doctor- only my midwives who I had a home birth with. Gave birth to my 9lb 4oz 23" long baby girl, ELEVEN days late (hey, she knew when she was ready!), at home with no medication, in an inflatable birthing pool. It was awesome. My milk came in within 2 days (holy heck did it come in!!), she never lost weight, she slept much better, was very alert and nursed very well, had no digestion issues and has always been SO HEALTHY! My son is very healthy too (thanks to being able to start making his formula at 6/7 weeks of age), but he did catch and still does tend to catch more illnesses than she ever has. I really do attribute this to the type of diet i ate while pregnant with her, versus the SAD (standard american diet) i ate while pregnant with him, as well as the first 6 weeks of powdered formula and the drug exposure he had during birth in the hospital....
ONE THING I have noticed that is astounding to me is the difference in their facial structures and teeth/jaw formation. After reading Weston Price's "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration", as well as Francis Pottenger's "Pottenger's Cats", it makes sense to me why this is so. My little girl has such a beautiful and wide jaw, with perfectly straight and spaced teeth which i know will allow for her permanents to grow in without crowding, while my son has very crowded teeth and a more narrow jaw and has already had cavities while my daughter has had ZERO. (SEE PICS!)
It really does make a difference what you eat before conception, during pregnancy, and what you feed your child.. (Btw, I supplemented with WAP homemade formula and eventually switched her to it completely when I decided to quit nursing- don't judge me)
I'm not saying everything in this book is completely 100% for everyone, but it worked for me and my babies. All of the information also led me into a completely different life as far as nutrition and eating. I try to stay away from grains completely these days as I have some long standing digestive issues, but if I do have them I believe they are best soaked or sprouted like this book says. Also, try sprouted nuts- SO DELICIOUS and so much better for you than roasted or even raw. Lots of good recipes in the book, and you'll get a ton of practice in the cooking and preparing of different foos. If nothing else, get it for the baby formula recipe and information pertaining to childhood nutrition. My favorite and most used part of the recipes in this book are the fermented foods and dairy.

Game changer on Health

This has changed my entire look on cooking and eating healthy. I made it a goal to cook atleast 3 recipes from this books once a week. So far I have some go to favorites and I'm still nervous to try the more obscure ones. I found out about his books from Youtuber MamaNatural. She has bee a game changer for me when it comes to unconventional health expectations. Just give it a read and try a few of the recipes. They are delicious and well worth the price.

Best Nutritional Guide on the Market and Recipes Too.

Nutrition information today can be extremely confusing. Too many special interests are involved in producing nutritional information for public consumption. The processed food industry gave us the dangerous “low fat” (high sugar) trend that dominated the 80’s and 90’s and left so many with heart disease and other health issues, for example. I even saw an old coke ad explaining why coke was a healthy part of weight loss diet. Sally Fallon takes on the self interests in the food industry in her phenomenal “Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and Diet Dictocrats” 2001. This book is based on the research of Weston A. Price, a dentist who discovered indigenous populations eating traditional diets were not only healthier, but they possessed better bone and teeth structures. He also found these same people groups quickly developed modern disease and deformity within a short time of switching to a western diet. “Nourishing Traditions” author Sally Fallon condenses Dr. Price’s research into sensible principles. But she does not leave off with the esoteric. A large portion of “Nourishing Traditions” centers around recipes designed around traditional food preparation methods that will also appeal to the modern palate. She has everything from a recipe for fermented “Ketchup” to instructions for making Kombucha to dishes utilizing organ meats.

People often ask me about healthy eating and over and over again, I point them to “Nourishing Traditions” and the Weston A. Price foundation. I have purchased multiple copies of “Nourishing Traditions” as gifts. If a person could only own one book on Nutrition, this one should be it.
