You cann`t count on this book only to write MCCQE2 or NAC-OSCE.
Its a big one.
You can use it as additional information resource, but do not use it as a first-line reference.

About the Author

Luke Bencie has traveled to more than 100 countries over the past 15 years on behalf of the U.S. intelligence community, as well as for the private defense industry. While abroad, he has experienced, firsthand and sometimes painfully, the threat of espionage and the lengths to which foreign intelligence services and other hostile global competitors will go to steal American business secrets. Very interesting

Who knew being a businessman was so dangerous? Each page opened up new insights into the dangers of international business travel which, unless you have served as an intelligence collector in the CIA, you would have little idea how to thwart. The informal (and witty) language makes it a fun read, but it is very informative as well. Highly recommended for business travelers.

When traveling you have to stay alert. You may have been targeted without even knowing it. Learn to tell the signs. Read this book. Spies, thieves and stalkers can easily recruit staff working at cafes, hotels, airports, restaurants or buss-stations. You may be drugged at the cafe and then robbed in your hotel room. Some taxi drivers may be in on it too. Lots of freelancing con-men and surplus spies around. They often work in groups. Be aware, that in some places police officers, health care workers, military personnel, public servants, staff at pharmacies and even firemen may be helping the criminals. Recommended reading for all business travelers carrying sensitive business information or intellectual property. Government agencies have control over wireless networks in airports and big hotels whereas freelancing industrial spies and con-men may have hotel staff, taxi drivers or others on their payroll. Stalker-T.I's may find the book useful too since gang-stalkers play spies... According to the book industrial-espionage is a crime that goes almost unnoticed. The same is true of organized-stalking. Both are invisible crimes that the police or media rarely pick up on. By the way, the writer has some interesting advice on how to behave when being stalked by industrial spies or con-men: Don't ever try to out-smart them. If you do, they will make the rest of your business-trip a nightmare. (They become vindictive if the Target tries to reveal them). And - from then on - they will undermine your business-dealings in every way they possibly can. Pretend you don't know they are spying on you and take precautions. For instance, never leave your electronic devices or passport out of sight. This is a highly readable book with hands-on advice. (The writer is a former FBI industrial and economic espionage expert)

Solid Information

So interesting and easy to read that I couldn't stop reading, with concise descriptions and information of danger zones and things to not do when traveling in order to protect business data from espionage. The book is crammed full of good suggestions.

If you travel at all, you need this book even if you don't have any intellectual property to protect. It's got plenty of examples of situations and how to avoid them, such as preventing theft at airports, crossing borders with a laptop computer, hotel thefts, room bugging, along with relevant war stories in counter-intelligence. It will sensitize you to be on guard when encountering overly friendly strangers in foreign nations by describing signs that you are being "recruited", or a target. You will discover how amazingly easy it is to lose proprietary information and secret data by inattention to details.

This is one of those rare books that I make a core part of my business library, because it is that good.

Topics covered include generational differences between Palladium Era mambo and modern salsa; mid-century antecedents to modern salsa in Cuba and Puerto Rico; tension between salsa as commercial vs. cultural practice; regional differences in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami; the role of the Web in salsa commerce; and adaptations of social Latin dance for stage performance. Throughout the book, salsa dance history is linked to histories of salsa music, exposing how increased separation of the dance from its musical inspiration has precipitated major shifts in Latin dance practice. As a whole, the book dispels the belief that one version is more authentic than another by showing how competing styles came into existence and contention. Based on over 100 oral history interviews, archival research, ethnographic participant observation, and analysis of Web content and commerce, the book is rich with quotes from practitioners and detailed movement description.

About the Author

Juliet McMains, Ph.D. is a dance scholar and artist whose work centers on social dance practices and their theatrical expression on competition and theatrical stages. Her first book, Glamour Addiction: Inside the American Ballroom Dance Industry (Wesleyan, 2006) won the 2008 Congress on Research in Dance Outstanding Publication Award. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Dance Program at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Juliet McMains is much more than a talented dancer and writer. Her valuable contribution in the field of Latin music shall stand as the benchmark
for future generations to come.
Her knowledge of the history of the Hispanic culture spans all parts of the U.S.A. from the North to South and East to West.
This book took much research. She threw herself into the many styles, while writing about her partners and the nuances of each dancer.
Her extensive collection of photographs will attest to the devotion and joy this history of Mambo has evoked.
We are taken on a grand trip through the evolution of the Mambo from it's early days to the Salsa of today.
Her hilarious observations and attention to detail, has me agreeing with every line This book I am highly recommending.
I have danced at the Palladium and from my many years as a Choreographer and teacher, I can say "Spot On".

an excellent read for the serious student

a really superbly researched account of the palladiuim-era mambo and its commercial spin-off so-called "salsa"; I have deeply studied cuban dance for 40 years and the section on the antecedents of mambo (specifically cuban son and guaracha) and how THEY warped into mambo itself was even touched upon; how cuban son was mis-named "rumba" and danced in two(2) different forms, box and diamond, is explored; the influence of 70s hustle with its (over-)abundant arm actions (hammerlocks, cuddles, pinwheels) and their effect on NY mambo confirmed with documentation my independent conclusions; the roundabout way cuban guaracha-son with its contratiempo dancing became mambo in ny and how that was transmitted to puerto rico to produce today's puerto rican salsa on 2 was revealing; that prior to the 80s (in the 60s and 70s) the SAME dance, under its REAL name (guaracha!) was danced in puerto rico on ct.1; the complete lack of any cuban/Caribbean base in LA style "salsa" producing somethin akin to theatrical hustle, ALL of this and more. an excellent read for the serious student. my only wish is that the author would write a book about how cuban son was "spun" into mambo...but that is another book...

About the Author
James R. Doty, M.D., is a professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University and the director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE), where he researches the neuroscience of compassion and altruism. He is also a philanthropist funding health clinics throughout the world and has endowed scholarships and chairs at multiple universities. He serves on the board of a number of nonprofits, including the Charter for Compassion International and the Dalai Lama Foundation.

The day I noticed my thumb was missing began like any other day the summer before I started eighth grade. I spent my days riding my bicycle around town, even though sometimes it was so hot the metal on my handlebars felt like a stove top. I could always taste the dust in my mouth—gritty and weedy like the rabbit brush and cacti that battled the desert sun and heat to survive. My family had little money, and I was often hungry. I didn’t like being hungry. I didn’t like being poor.
 
Lancaster’s greatest claim to fame was Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier at nearby Edwards Air Force Base some twenty years earlier. All day long planes would fly overhead, training pilots and testing aircraft. I wondered what it would be like to be Chuck Yeager flying the Bell X-1 at Mach 1, accomplishing what no human had ever done before. How small and desolate Lancaster must have looked to him from forty five thousand feet up going faster than anyone ever thought possible. It seemed small and desolate to me, and my feet were only a foot above the ground as I pedaled around on my bike.
 
I had noticed my thumb missing that morning. I kept a wooden box under my bed that had all my most prized possessions. A small notebook that held my doodles, some secret poetry, and random crazy facts I had learned—like twenty banks are robbed every day in the world, snails can sleep for three years, and it’s illegal to give a monkey a cigarette in Indiana. The box also held a worn copy of Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, dog-eared on the pages that listed the six ways to get people to like you. I could recite the six things from memory.
 
1. Become genuinely interested in other people.
2. Smile.
3. Remember that a person’s name is, to that person, the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
4. Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.
5. Talk in terms of the other person’s interest.
6. Make the other person feel important—and do it sincerely.
 
I tried to do all of these things when I talked to anyone, but I always smiled with my mouth closed because when I was younger I had fallen and hit my upper lip on our coffee table, knocking out my front baby tooth. Because of that fall my front tooth grew in crooked and was discolored a dark brown. My parents didn’t have the money to get it fixed. I was embarrassed to smile and show my discolored crooked tooth, so I tried to keep my mouth closed at all times.
 
Besides the book, my wooden box also had all my magic tricks—a pack of marked cards, some gimmicked coins that I could change from nickels into dimes, and my most prized possession: a plastic thumb tip that could hide a silk scarf or a cigarette. That book and my magic tricks were very important to me—gifts from my father. I had spent hours and hours practicing with that thumb tip. Learning how to hold my hands so it wouldn’t be obvious and how to smoothly stuff the scarf or a cigarette inside it so that it would appear to magically disappear. I was able to fool my friends and our neighbors in the apartment complex. But today the thumb was missing.
Gone. Vanished. And I wasn’t too happy about it.
 
My brother, as usual, wasn’t home, but I figured maybe he had taken it or at least might know where it was. I didn’t know where he went every day, but I decided to get on my bike and go looking for him. That thumb tip was my most prized possession. Without it I was nothing. I needed my thumb back.

One Doctor's Prescription for a Much Better World.

Back in the 1970's, I took a meditation course with a well-known Hindu teacher named Swami Rama, who was one of the first yogis whose significant mental powers were studied by Western scientists. What I learned from him about the tools of relaxation, meditation, focusing on a mantra were very effective in my life. But like so many others, my best intentions were waylaid by daily living, and after a few years I stopped meditating. This was to my detriment since the constant stress of working, raising a family and trying to keep my head above water financially created havoc with my health.

In the meantime, Swami Rama became a controversial character after being accused by several women of being sexually abused and exploited by the "holy man" in his Ashram. This kind of revelation has become almost common place as we've come to understand that great teachers can all-too-often possess a great ability to take advantage of those he or she teaches and who place so much trust and love in that person.

Today, "mindfulness" is almost a buzzword in everything from sports to business as meditation has been studied and proven to be beneficial and rewarding to those who practice it.

As I read through the first few chapters of "Into the Magic Shop", I felt a definite deja vu as Dr. Doty describes the "magic" he was taught by Ruth in the magic shop of his youth. I purchased the book because the blurb about Dr. Doty seemed intriguing, but I soon felt like the book was nothing more than a self-help book disguised as an autobiography, and while I understood that the magic described in the book is indeed powerful, I already knew all about what he was describing as the "magic" and was about to put the book aside; disappointed that the book never felt like it was going anywhere.

I'm very glad that I didn't, however, since once Dr. Doty began to relate the amazing journey he took from Lancaster, California to the pinnacle of financial and professional success, the book became one I couldn't put down. The remarkable arc of his journey becomes a life lesson for so many people hell bent on success at all costs.

Dr. Doty is frank about his failings in relationships and about how the magic he learned got him everything he wanted materially, but let him bankrupt in many other ways. It was only when he began to understand that only through Kindness, Compassion, Empathy and Love does a life truly become fulfilled that he understood how he had misused the magic he'd learned.

In our society, the words above are used often, but they are not taken to heart, which is the organ Dr. Doty believes be the true seat of our greatest human virtues; not the brain.

Dr. Doty's story of how the magic he learned as a child can be used toward good or ill is a vitally important one in a society that values material wealth, fame and irresponsible consumerism as the most desirable. Not one to just talk about Kindness, Compassion, Empathy and Love, he created the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University. CCARE states as its mission that it "investigates methods for cultivating compassion and promoting altruism within individuals and society through rigorous research, scientific collaborations, and academic conferences. In addition, CCARE provides a compassion cultivation program and teacher training as well as educational public events and programs."

"Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon's Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart" is both a fascinating journey of a successful neurosurgeon and entrepreneur as well as a remarkable prescription for creating a much happier and healthier individual so that those same benefits can be shared with the entire human population. It is an ambitious goal, but one that more and more people feel dedicated to achieving; especially in a world where hatred, injustice and intolerance seem to predominate in our media and in our politics.

Kindness Is His Religion . . . .

This book is an interesting one that I read in one night. It is both a memoir and a metaphysical book, and is written by a neurosurgeon. The introduction has a graphic description of brain surgery which I stopped reading long before it was over. Chapter One then goes back to Lancaster, California in 1968, where the author is a twelve-year-old who feels like he is most unlucky where his family is concerned. His father is an alcoholic with unsteady employment, his mother is depressed and sometimes suicidal, his older brother is always frightened, and eviction is always a possibility. But then he walks into a magic shop one day, where Ruth, the owner’s mother, decides he would be a good candidate to teach the “magic” of metaphysics.

What she basically teaches him is meditation and visualization. Those are two topics I’ve read much about, since I’ve read hundreds of metaphysical books, but have never been truly enticed to practice. No, I’m not going to add "until now". Although if you are interested in those two things and don’t won’t to get bogged down in "heavy" reading, this book would be an excellent one to read. What you will learn is “relaxing the body”, “taming the mind”, “opening the heart” and “clarifying your intent”. There are step-by-step instructions, of two to three pages, about each of those techniques after they are discussed. There are also audio versions of those instructions at a website mentioned in the book. Thus, this is a bit of a self-help book, too.

Dr. Doty describes how his childhood is tremendously changed after spending six weeks learning Ruth’s lessons. His family life doesn’t really change, he is the one who changes. Sometimes while reading this book, it seems unreal a 12-year-old American boy in 1968 would have the patience and desire to learn those lessons, but I will believe that the good doctor is telling the truth. He then goes on to describe the rest of his life, where he beat all odds to go to college and medical school, and became a very successful and wealthy neurosurgeon. With success came arrogance, however, and there were some disastrous happenings. But once Dr. Doty realized he was listening too much to his brain and not enough to his heart, he balanced out his life and began teaching compassion and altruism. Like the Dalai Lama, he says kindness is his religion. The author has certainly come a long way from his days as an angry, envious child, who was afraid his life would always be defined by his unhappy, poor family and circumstances beyond his control. A good read.

One of the best stories ever that corroborates decades of research on fostering resiliency "for kids like Jim."

After 25 years teaching, writing, and dialoguing with thousands about human resiliency, I am considered an expert in the field. This is one of the very best books I have ever read on the subject. I am not sure Dr. Doty even understands how much of what helped him "succeed despite the odds" (for kids like him) is in alignment with the growing body of resiliency research. There were and sadly are a myriad of kids like Jim, but the question to be answered is, why did he "make it" and so many others -probably some he went to school with, and certainly his brother and sister- did not? One finding from resiliency research is "the power of one person", especially the right person at the right time in a child's life.

One reason there are not more "Ruths" in the world is that many people have the erroneous belief that a few hours or a few weeks of caring, support, positive mirroring, teaching life skills, and encouragement such as Ruth gave Jim can't hold a torch to the daily stress and trauma of poverty, alcoholism, and mental illness in a child's home.

Dr. Doty's story effectively challenges this myth. The story also provides evidence that "even a little bit" given to a child in need can make an amazing difference and it corroborates the research on resiliency now proliferating in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, and sociology. Yet nothing is as powerful as a human face, a real story, behind the research statistics and Dr. Doty's story is as powerful a story as I have ever heard (and I have heard hundreds). Yes, this is a great book for a struggling young person, but it is just as important for neighbors, educators, ministers, youth workers, community volunteers, and everyone who has ever been inspired to try to help a struggling child.

Was it the "magic" Ruth taught Jim that helped him so much? We have a growing body of brain research that suggests what she taught might have changed his young brain. But we also now **know** that the kind of kindness, compassion, caring and belief Jim got from both Ruth and her son Neil, when he had it no where else in his life, create the foundation for fostering a resilient outcome for all kids like Jim.

Just so-so

Though the book covers a wide range of both up-and-coming as well as established designers, to be honest, if i would have had the chance to page through it I wouldn't have purchased it. I was looking for inspiring fashion illustration, but what this book confirmed for me is that fashion illustration is best done by fashion illustrators, not fashion designers. I agree with other that comment that the cover is deceiving-- but not because, like other commenters, I DIDN"T like it, but because I LOVE the cover illustration and hoped that similarly fresh, contemporary, and cutting edge drawings would be inside. Instead, most of the illustration is in a very generic minimalist fashion design style (you know the generic line/stick figure body drawn with sweeping strokes to represent draped cloth) or very dated a la 80s-90s (probably because most of the designers featured were in school about that time and continue drawing their sketches in the style they developed in school). Most of the drawings are more functional for the designer rather than original but don't contain technical notes on garment construction.

I was hoping to buy a book I could pour over, and really sink my teeth into each drawing, but most of the drawings are minimalist, generically styled, or dated looking. I also assumed, even if the actual drawing didn't inspire, that the book would provide a really inside, intimate look into the creative process with handwritten notes or detailed description, but alas, it does not. The book covers a huge range of designers offering a few illustrations from each along side a very brief half-paragraph about who they are (often information you could find in wikipedia). It seems more quantity over quality.

To be fair though:

there are some really original drawings by Hanuk kim, Costello Tagliapietra, antonio ciutto, aitor throup, ricardo tisci, lovisa burfitt, and over course the cover artist Alena Akhumadullina.

The book is large and comes in a very sturdy hardback cover, making it an ideal coffee table book.

There are contemporary 'it' designers like Rodarte, Badgley Mischka, etc along side legends like YSL, Lagerfeld, betsey johnson, etc.

Stylishly Sketched

An exciting collection of drawings, paintings and illustrations created by international fashion designers showing (once and for all) the tremendous variety of drawing styles one can use to communicate ideas for clothing and accessories design. From the classically trained drawing skills to the uniquely stylized,personal work to a few using the computer.Most of the work looks hand drawn with energy and passion. A welcome change from the many books showcasing cold, high-tech-HACK work with no individuality.
This is not a How-to-draw-fashion book (and thank god!) for there are far too many of those HACK-books: dreadfully boring, mediocre, unstylish and uninspiring books that never seems to be in touch with ANY kind fashion. This is the kind of book that really inspires a fashion professional or student.
The cover seems a very odd choice considering all the knock-out art inside. Alot of people have mentioned they would never be attracted to open the book based on the cover.

Good but not original....

I've really enjoyed the Heaven series, and was looking forward to the Indigo Knights series. Unfortunately they are basically the same stories, just with different names.... The writing was good, the sex was hot, but there wasn't anything original in this one. Danny is in the band, has a crush on his straight room mate, they fool around, Danny wants more, but he's leaving for a tour, he manages to not give in to groupies, he and Cash reunite, and it all works out. Fun, but not original, and I'd guess fairly unlikely in the rock and roll world!

It was still a fun, well written book, I'll keep reading them, but hope for a bit more drama from the next one.

Danny and Cash have been strictly friends and roommates for a while now but when Danny learns of Cash’s inexperience and vehemence that guys don’t want romance, he can’t resist showing Cash just what he’s missing. What Danny thought would just be sex between them turns into so much more when he starts to crave Cash outside the bedroom. But Danny and Cash live two very different lives and Cash is adamant he doesn’t belong in Danny’s. Can Danny convince Cash there’s no one he wants more than the very roommate who doesn’t believe he’s in Danny’s league?

Awwww, these two! My heart couldn’t take it! Gah! They were just so cute and a tad angsty and sweet and hot! I absolutely loved Danny as a character. He’s cocky but he’s also sort of dramatic. He’s not arrogant or rude, he’s actually very sweet, especially when it comes to Cash. He’s a playboy but when he gets involved with Cash, he realizes he’s finally found something he’s wanted for a while now. Cash, on the other hand, is still a bit of an enigma in that beyond knowing he’s scared, confused and a complete computer geek, we don’t know much about him. He grows throughout the story from an awkward boy to a grown man but we don’t get his POV so it was hard to really tell his feelings towards Danny unless he spoke or acted on them.

My biggest issue with this one was the sex! There was just soooo much of it! I LOVED the overall story but I ended up skimming most of the sex because there was a lot of it. I loved Danny and Cash together and they were definitely hot, especially since Cash was so innocent and naive, but it was ultimately just too much for me.

Overall, this was still a great story. I just ADORED Cash and Danny, as individuals and a couple. I loved the uncertainty around their relationship but also the yearning Danny had for Cash. I also liked seeing the Indigo Knights start their rise to fame and seeing more of the Heaven Sent boys. I’m definitely looking forward to the next story in this series, Lance, because he’s definitely an intriguing character!

Love doesn't always happen when it's convenient. Danny is just starting the hard work it takes to make his band, Indigo Knights, a huge success. It involves long hours in the studio and a relentless touring schedule. Falling for his computer nerd roommate, Cash, is not on Danny's busy agenda. That doesn't seem to matter to Danny's heart though. What starts as a fun fling soon turns serious for Danny but he has to convince a very reluctant Cash that Danny and his heart are for keeps.

Champion picks up a few months after the first Indigo Knights book, Squire, leaves off. If you're new to the series or the author, don't worry. It's very easy to pick up the threads and enjoy this one on its own. Those familiar with this series and the previous wildly popular Heaven Sent series will definitely enjoy the few cameos from favorite characters. Mykles knows how to write great rockers and here the talents are on display yet again. Cash and Danny are fun together with obvious chemistry and the author definitely doesn't skimp on the sex scenes, which are plentiful. The story is told from Danny's perspective and it's nice to get into the head of the lead singer. His characterization is nicely well rounded with good self awareness. Danny initially doesn't want to fall in love. He wants to be the rock star that has a ton of groupies and live the life and only later fall in love and settle down. Don't worry though because there is no infidelity but instead the emotional and mental obstacles Danny goes through are nice to watch and feel very genuine.

On the flip side Cash is much less well defined. He remains a shadowy figure and very one sided. He's jaded and almost angry without any real depth or explanation for his feelings. The story would have benefited a lot from including some of Cash's perspective. While I like this couple well enough, they feel flatter and less vibrant than other pairings in the rocker series from Mykles. The cameos from previous characters are wonderful though and I loved each and every one. I also like the set up for the other band members and look forward to reading their true love stories. This combined with the good writing and descriptive quality of the story elevate it from just another fluff story.

Overall, Champion is a good addition to the series and overall rocker books from this author. You can pick it up on its own and enjoy the clean writing, good wit, and hot sex. It makes for an easy and very fast read. Although I didn't like this particular book as much as previous books, it's still an easy one to recommend. I think fans will really enjoy it and I personally eagerly look forward to more in the series.
