About the Author
Victoria A. Harden retired in 2006 after twenty years as the founding director of the Office of NIH History at the National Institutes of Health. She has written numerous articles about AIDS and has lectured widely on its history. Dr. Harden is the author of Inventing the NIH: Federal Biomedical Research Policy, 1887–1937 (1986) and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever: History of a Twentieth-Century Disease (1990), the latter winning the Henry Adams Prize from the Society for History in the Federal Government. She received the American Historical Association’s 2006 Herbert Feis Award for outstanding contributions to public history. In 2007 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association for the History of Medicine. She lives in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Outstanding Work

In AIDS at 30, Harden has written a masterful history of the first three decades of AIDS. Actually, she traces the emergence of HIV even further back to the early decades of the 20th Century in Africa where clear signs of HIV infection were evident. More solid evidence is found in the 1970s when researchers went back to examine stored blood samples of those whose deaths fit the profile of infection with HIV. It's clear HIV has been with us for about a century, but it escaped the confines of Africa only in the past 50 years or so, and it didn't begin reaching epidemic status until the 1980s.

Harden presents her text as one for the general reader, and indeed her presentation is lucid and easily comprehended. As I began reading the first chapter I feared I was taking up a text that was *too* simplistic and aimed for a reader with no science background whatsoever. However, the pace picks up quickly, and while the writing remains clear and straightforward, this reader was thoroughly engaged with the content throughout the remainder of the text. It is a fascinating read.

I was impressed with the thoroughness and comprehensiveness of her text, as well as its incisiveness. Her text is about as lengthy as Jonathan Engel's The Epidemic, but Harden covers an additional ten years in the same amount of space, and even where the chronology overlaps, Harden supplies more information than Engel did.

Harden utilizes a much broader array of sources for her study rather than simply regurgitating articles from The New York Times and Newsweek as Engel did. To be fair, she may have an advantage over Engel because she is employed by the National Institutes of Health as a historian, and therefore she has access to oral histories which may not have been available to Engel. However, Harden also utilizes numerous other resources to construct her narrative including interviews and other published historical studies, and I can only attribute laziness or poor workmanship to Engel for failing to take advantage of these sources. Simply put, Engel did not do his homework, thus making Harden's text a standout effort.

For me, one sign of a well-written historical work is whether it contains pointers to other texts, other books, for further reading, either explicitly or implicitly. Harden's text has inspired me to track down and read about two dozen additional books which she used as sources. Engel did not provide anything approaching this level of inspiration. Engel explicitly labeled his text as a global history, and he was only partially successful to this end, doing a fair job discussing the AIDS epidemic in Africa. Harden, however, does not make such a claim for her book, yet she successfully provides the global history lacking in Engel's text, and her discussion of AIDS in Africa surpasses Engel's writings on the same topic.

Brava, Ms. Harden, for an excellent work. I hope we can look forward to a second edition of AIDS at 35 or AIDS at 40.

Informative & Readable

Having recently been diagnosed as HIV+, this book was an interesting journey into learning the wheres, whys & hows of this chronic disease. It is very readable, understandable and occasionally fascinating, as it delves into the origins of the disease, the history of our national reaction at the time, and what great strides we've made in helping to turn the disease from a death sentence to a chronic, though manageable, condition. Definitely recommended for HIV+ patients, and all who want to learn about the disease.

Bear-ever Yours

Leah has won a two week vacation on a tropical island from a contest she doesn't remember entering. Her vacation package includes private scuba lessons with the very delicious Sky, the youngest son of the owner of the resort. Sky recognizes Leah immediately as his mate and sets out to woo her and teach her about her previously unknown bear heritage. Sky is my version of the ideal man, he wants nothing more than to love, cherish, protect, and cuddle with his mate.

Some Bear to Love

Just as good as the first one!!! Kim is a bear shifter who won a two week vacation on an island in the Grand Caymans in a contest she didn't sign up for. Sebastian is one of three brothers that their dad is matching up with their mates by bringing in three women who won this mysterious contest. Sebastian is a control freak captain who's first and only love is the sea and he doesn't want or have room for a mate in his life. Kim is using this vacation as a last hoorah before she is forced to mate with a male she's been betrothed to since birth and has never met. What starts as a fling quickly turns into something much more and both of them have their reasons for it to stay no strings attached, no matter their feelings for one another.

One in a Bear-lion

Scott is the oldest brother of three and runs the day to day operations of his father's resort in the Grand Caymans. After his father's disastrous mating, none of the brothers are interested in finding their own mates. Their fathers takes it into his own hands and brings three women to the island to mate with each of his sons. Mara is an artist who hasn't been able to create her art in three years ever since she acquired a stalker who desecrates her paintings and "gifts" them back to her. This vacation is the first time in a long time she has felt safe and hopes to be able to paint again. The chemistry between Scott and Mara is great and I love the reluctant but powerful protective instincts Scott has for her. This would have been very good book to end the stories of the three brothers, but I'm glad that it seems Sam, their dad, is going to get his own story. I'm really excited to read their father's story since the three brothers have decided they owe their father one for matching them up with their mates and want him happily mated as well. I predict good times ahead lol.

Remem-bear Me

What a great way to end the series!!! Sam has been doing his best to live his life after his mate left him to raise their three sons twenty years ago. After matching up all three sons to their mates, they try and return the favor by matching him up, the only problem is that he already has a match, their mom. One day, while watching his four grandkids, Sam opens his door to find none other then his long lost mate, Joanna, on the other side. Jo was shot twenty years ago and doesn't remember anything about her life before then. She sees Sam in a commercial about the resort and can't help but feel drawn to him and the resort. Sam and Jo spend a bliss filled week together before memories of the past start to intrude on their fantasy situation, Sam is afraid that when Jo remembers her bear, she'll leave him like she did last time, regardless of her promises never to leave him again. I am so glad that Sam finally got his HEA and I liked getting a glimpse into the lives of Sky, Sebastian and Scott's lives with their mates and kids. I'm sad to see the end of the series but at the same time it was a fantastic way to end the series without leaving anything hanging.

I love these series of books

I like the love stories of Sky & Leah, Sebastien & Kim, Scott & Mara, and their father Sam & their mother Jo. That Jo had left her family when the boys were young and Sam looked for her for twenty years hoping she would find her way back to her family. She came back with no memory of who Sam was but had seen a commercial that featuring the hotel with Sam in it and she hoped he could give her the information about her life. They all must overcome all the bad feelings they were left with when she disappeared twenty years before. It was not easy for any of them but in the end everything works out.

Totally loved this set of books, I read them one at a time, lucky you can read back to back!!! Was thrilled for the final book and the well deserved HEA!!! Each is a standalone, but the characters are entwined in each book, setting up the next in the series.

Pumps, razors, brooms and other vices and virtues of thinking

If you have enjoyed any of Daniel Dennett's other books you will enjoy this. It is a pleasing, humorous and insightful journey into a gallery of mundane and profound thinking tools drawn from a wide-ranging set of disciplines, from literature and science to psychology and philosophy. It's worth noting that this is not really a "how to" book. Instead it's more like a survey of common as well as uncommon tools that human beings consciously and unconsciously use to both understand the world better and communicate and empathize with each other. Not surprisingly, given Dennett's profession, the bent is slightly more philosophical although the book is easy to read and appreciate.

The book starts with the simplest of tools, such as making mistakes. Dennett illuminates how making mistakes is not just ok but desirable since it's perhaps the only way to hone a system of thinking into a useful device. Other parts of the book cover concepts like reductio ad absurdum, Occam's Razor and the wittily-named Occam's Broom which is sometimes used nefariously to sweep arguments under the rug. There's a fair amount of ground Dennett covers before he gets to the concept stated in the book's name - intuition pumps. Intuition pumps refer to anything - from thought experiments to linguistic devices - that somehow make us bypass the process of rigorous thinking and reach a revelation primarily through intuition. One of the virtues of the book is how it describes examples of both good and bad intuition pumps including sleights of hand used by politicians and pseudoscientists. I was quite impressed by Dennett's attention to even very simple tools invoked through common expressions; for instance one of the fallacies he describes is the use of the word "rather" that's routinely used to set up a false dichotomy.

Given Dennett's other writings, it's not surprising to find him often refer to evolution as a rich mine for many of the tools. Variation, making mistakes, and generating lots of ideas to pick the best ones are all traits of the evolutionary process. Dennett also draws on work by diverse thinkers, from Wittgenstein to Stephen Jay Gould to Douglas Adams, to illustrate the power and pitfalls of language and thought. His trademark subtle (and not so subtle) wit and familiarity with a vast amount of pop culture and science is clearly apparent in the writing. The book will definitely reward those who like to think about thinking, and it's one I can definitely see myself periodically savoring like a plate of diverse appetizers.

More philosophical prompts than thinking tools

Very intellectual book, but I'm not sure it was really warranted. This definitely isn't going to be very comprehendible for laymen, and he speaks in very math-y computer science-y terms that even I have trouble with at times as a computer scientist. I've tried to talk about parts of it with my friends and it is very hard to articulate, and now a few months after reading I can't recall a single point he made, although I do remember the interesting parts about the ghost in the machine. To be fair, I don't think he writes this way for the sake of sounding smart, a lot of his points are actually extremely complicated and need all the introductory information to get them across. The book makes you think about thinking in a very interesting manner, and how our beliefs are formed and connected to our other beliefs.

Also, I'm not sure the title fits the book -- I would probably categorize it as a philosophy book with a bunch of interesting prompts then a book that I would get practical advice out of, although there is a decent amount of information that could be potentially applied practically.

I really wanted to like this book.

I guess I had much higher expectations. I reached about half way (page 216), but it didn’t grab my attention. I have a degree in biomedical engineering and a major in philosophy so I guess I’m familiar with most of the thinking tools he offered. I thought this book would’ve at least been an interesting reminder of what I’ve studied, but I see now that once you know something, repetition of it gets boring.

WHAT'S GOING ON?

Everyday we do things. Some seem to be done without thinking and some are very thoughtful. Most people don't think about thinking, they just go about their merry way. Apostle Price brings forth in a succinct and clear way what is really going on and the necessity of being prepared and how to prepare. Most people, even Christians are very ignorant of the word of God and of a world with people and things we cannot touch or see except on rare occasions. We take air in and out through our lungs into our bodies. It is very vital to us, but we can't see it, only feel it when "something" causes it to move, so we don't think about it...where it comes from, where did lungs come from, what is inhaling and exhaling. We just breathe. God gave us his word and he gives us people to get across to us REALITY. For me, aside from the Bible itself, THE MIND by Apostle Price is the best book I have read so far. It is vital reading for anyone. For true Christians, it will help you to think and grow. For non-believers in Christ, it will help you to think...Is the Bible really true? Is what I am seeing what is really going on in the world and Am I safe? Everlastingly safe with what I believe. Satan wants the mind of every human being for we are all made in the image of God and his worse nightmare.

A necessity, but needs updating.

Needs to be updated with some focus. This manual has a lot of outdated information, and it should not. Several of the devices discussed are many years out of date, and that should not happen in a manual of this notoriety and cost.

Extremely Useful.

Whenever I read a book, I generally use highlighter and underliner to mark the sentences and words that convey the true meaning and essence of what the author wants to say. While reading The Tibetan Book of Living And Dying, I had to stop using the highlighter after a few pages only as the most of the words on each page were worthy of being highlighted. Indeed, the author has said so much precious on every page that a reader must read and re-read the book and with every reading she/he gets more and more knowing.The subject of death has been most puzzling and perplexing to humankind since the time immemorial. The Eastern way of looking at the death as only a 'transition' is explained by the author in a profoundly simple manner. The book certainly helps one to understand the true meaning of the phenomena called death. This understanding helps one to reduce the irrational fear of death. From the lives of the great men and women we know that those who 'lived' a life can only meet the 'death' with equnimity. Thus the author has first taught the art of 'living'. It is only through right type of living that we can 'live' the death also.
I suggest that this book be read by all the Buddhist as well as by non buddhists also. Every one who reads it will find something for him/her.
I salute Sogyal Rinpoche for giving us a wonderful gift of THE TIBETAN BOOK OF LIVING AND DYING.

After reading other reviews, I feel it might help to say this:
Yes, there is quite a substantial amount of Tibetan ritual encased in this book. But that shouldn't be a surprise, or a hindrance - it IS the "TIBETAN Book of Living and Dying", and not the "Generically Believable For Everyone, Book of Living And Dying".
With that in mind, I loved reading this book. From the first page, I was drawn into a world where compassion and mindfulness reign, and it's these tools that will help us face the inevitable truth that we *are* all going to die, at some point.
Rinpoche skillfully shares his own wisdom, that of many other masters, and anecdotal evidence of what may happen when we physically die, and the stages we may go through during the process.
Topics discussed include the Bardo states, reincarnation, the concept of karma, and fear of the unknown. The book is very readable, and covers the material therein with sensitivity and warmth. At times, it may be difficult to the average Western mind to grasp the concepts of such things are reincarnation - but as Buddha himself did advise, the goal is to read, absorb and take what YOU find important from the lesson...not to read blindly and accept everything blindly.
To anyone even vaguely interested in Buddhism, death and dying or simply becoming more aware of their own self, this book is an invaluable addition to your library.
Truly a classic.

a must for a Buddhist library

This book fully captures the essence of Tibetan Buddhism. I don't claim to be an authority on the subject, but I was born into a Buddhist household that has remained faithful and reverent to both Mahayana and Hiyana traditions of Buddhism. From the information I've had passed on to me by both family and Tibetan Buddhist clergy, this book has never been contradictory to anything lecture I've heard. In fact, everybody seems to recommend it enthusiastically!
Essentially, according to Tibetan Buddhism, the purpose of living is to cultivate the mind and purify the body and soul to prepare for death. Westerners may, at first glance, find this philosophy morbid. However, we must remember that reincarnation is integral to Buddhist text (and most world religions, for that matter; the 'one life' theory is actually relatively new). Death is explained as a transitional period, like the end of a chapter to a book. To waste away ones life is like wasting away all your money without care for the future. Basically, this philosophy heavily emphasizes living in the present with thoughtfulness and offers a plethora of Buddhist insight into life and death. It also stresses the urgency of cultivation in a day and age when we disregard life, old age, and disease as trivial matters and nothing that science cannot combat.
The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying is written by a Rinpoche. For those who are not familiar with Tibetan titles, a Lama is essentially a monk who has abandond wordly comforts for a spiritual pursuit, and a Rinpoche is a recognized reincarnation of an esteemed Lama.
If you are a Buddhist, I highly recommend this book. It is enlightening, insightful, and an absolute must in any Buddhist library. Whether you follow the traditions of Chinese Buddhism, Zen or Chan, take the Amitabha or Guan Yin approach, etc., as a fellow Buddhist to another, you should not go without having this book. It's available in Chinese, as well, for the Buddhists out there who are more adept at Chinese than English.
For seekers, this is a wonderful guide, as well. The best part with any book as wonderful as this is that everytime you read it, you'll find new insight in the words. Beginners and established Buddhists alike will take in much insight.
I also highly recommend this to Buddhists who are unfamiliar with the Tibetan traditions. The Tibetan texts will open a whole new door for you. I know from personal experience, because my mother (who is the spiritual leader of the family) was originally a student of Chinese Buddhism, but after reading this book, our entire family discovered a whole other arena of philosophies that have done nothing but enrich our practices.
So whether you're already a Buddhist wishing to broaden your knowledge, a Buddhist who would like new material to absorb, or a seeker who is just curious of the fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism, this book is definitely a must.
