Today Chigorin is best remembered for his contributions to opening theory. He was the finest gambit player of his generation, but it is his pioneering work in defences to the Spanish Game and Queen’s Gambit as well as various King’s Indian formations that has been the most enduring.
The present book is a hugely expanded second edition of that published in 1987. Over two hundred extra games have been included, annotated by Chigorin and his contemporaries in addition to more modern grandmasters. The biographical part has been extended with hundreds of pages of material depicting Chigorin’s turbulent life.

An outstanding portrait of a 19th century chess artist and his era!

This is a preliminary review as I have only gone through the first 220 pages. So far it has been an elegant journey through the later half of 19th century chess history.
This is a wonderful book about one of best chessplayers of the 19th century - Mikhail Chigorin twice played for the world championship, losing to Wilhelm Steinitz 10-6 and the second time by 10-8. Chigorin had one terrible weakness as a practical player at the World Championship level: he had no coherent system to deal with d-pawn openings; in the first match, Chigorin lost 7 of 8 games games when Steinitz opened 1. Nf3 and 2. d4 (or 1. d4 and 2. Nf3) and in the second match he lost 0-3 when Steinitz played the queen pawn opening.
Jimmy Adams states "In the match came to light the weak side of Chigorin - the sportsman. He ought to have set himself the task, long before, of finding a correct system of play as Black against 1. d4. In 1889, as indeed also later, he placed too many hopes on improvisation at the board."
The next great Russian champion, Alekhine, with the benefit of almost 40 years of chess development, had a full understanding of how to defend against 1. d4. In 16 games, defending against against Capablanca's Queen's Gambit Declined, Alekhine scored 2 wins, 3 losses and 11 draws, allowing himself to win the match when he had the White pieces.
The layout, formatting and fonts used, make this book enjoyable to read and add greatly to the appreciation of Chigorin's biography.
The layout of the games is especially comfortable, as the game moves are in bold font, columnar-fashion and the comments and variations are dropped down one line, separate from the game moves. This avoids the "crowding" that occurs in some chess books, where it is difficult to tell the difference between variations and the game move "tree trunk".
Also discussed in interesting detail are other chessplayers of that era, such as Winawer, Schiffers, Alapin (who was a backstabbing enemy of Chigorin), Tarrasch, Lasker, Pillsbury, Charousek, Teichmann and others. Alapin supplied Steinitz with opening analysis prior to the match against Chigorin, which played a role in Chigorin's defeat.
The author gives a good portrait of the oppressive Russian society of that era within which Chigorin strove to express his chess art.
There are approximately 220 annotated chess games, with the right touch of variations and verbal explanations and many stories and biographical portraits.

An interesting book on the history of chess

This is a big book; over 700 pages; it's heavy to carry; but it's great; it brings together a great deal of information about the man, his devotion to chess, his games and background information of the times and place; the book is a mixture of material from the earlier edition, translated work and edited material; many of Chigorin's games are in the book as you would expect; many are accompanied by comments from the man himself, but it is not all technical information about games; lots of photos enhance the book; I have not finished reading it yet - but I like what I have read so far; the book is well bound (hardback).

America after WWII: The Good and The Bad

An amusing, short novel about a used-car dealer who attempts to join the creative class and make a low-budget film. Richard Hudson is something of an antihero--he's not at all virtuous, but he is often likable, and the book contains a fair amount of black humor. Hudson is a guy with all the answers, who knows all the angles, who's always in control, and it shouldn't be too much of a spoiler to say that he eventually gets kicked in the teeth and gets a richly earned comeuppance at the end of the novel (though the book wisely avoids him learning any "life lessons"). The book also possesses some keen social insight into postwar America, which is inevitably teeming with odd and misplaced sexuality, hubris, and incuriosity, but also with hope, optimism and opportunity. In short: good little book, well-written and highly readable.

An outrageously cold character for it's time

I have read about Charles Willeford for a long time, but this was the first of his books I have actually read. My wife got me a very valuable (and expensive) first edition of this book for me for my birthday. It was originally published in 1960 as a sleeze paperback, and is very difficult to come by today. Not wanting to take a chance on it getting messed up when I read it, I picked up this edition. This edition suffers from some nagging problems, such as no indication of when the book was written, many typos, and a lame cover. You should see the one on the first edition!
The book is amazingly well written, and the main character, Richard Hudson, is as blunt and brutal a character as you are likely to find anywhere. The story is told from his perspective, and it leaves you pretty drained by the end. His way of handling an unwanted pregnancy is something that will haunt me for years to come. For fans of of the noir tale, I think you'll like this one.

About the Author
Born and raised in New York City, Margaret Fieland has been around art and music all her life. Her poems and stories have appeared in journals such as Turbulence Magazine, Front Range Review, and All Rights Reserved. She is one of the Poetic Muselings. She is the author of Relocated, Geek Games, and Broken Bonds, published by MuseItUp Publishing , and of Sand in the Desert, a collection of science fiction persona poems. Relocated

I was hesitant about starting Relocated after seeing the cover. It just didn't really appeal to me. But I jumped in and wow am I ever glad I did.
I loved this book.

Scenery descriptions in Relocated are amazing. They made me want to crawl inside the book to experience it, within the pages.

The characters were incredible. I really liked all of them.

Ardaval was definitely my favourite. I loved the relationship that developed between him and Keth.

I loved the tight knit nature of the Aleyne and their way of doing things.
A more hands off gentler approach. The more I read the more I really came to appreciate their people. (As well as their poetry)

I was actually sad to reach the end of Relocated. The ending really suited the book, yet I find myself curious about what happens with Keth and his new found life and family afterwards.

I would LOVE this book to open up to a series.

Relocated has a special kind of magic to it. It opens you up to a world you realize you are just not ready to leave when it's over.

I Googled the authors name with the words Relocated poetry and found there is a book of poetry mentioned /written in to Relocated.
Needless to say, it's on it's way to my mailbox.

Great YA Book

Relocated is a beautiful story that I really enjoyed reading. Although there are sporadic grammar issues, more towards the end, it didn't take away too much. There were parts where I had to stop to figure out what was intended though.

My biggest complaint is that there just isn't enough development through the characters. I wanted to see more between Martin & Keth. Also, when dramatic things happened, it wasn't really cracked open enough. It was almost skimmed over. After the death of Keth's father was the best attempt at cracking open a dramatic event, but I still wanted more.

Regardless of these minor issues, I really enjoyed the journey. I loved the nesting stories within as well and how they really tied together with the overall story. Considering this is Margaret Fieland's first attempt at this genre, it was really well done. If she goes through with an editor and expands in some areas this book would definitely be better and a solid 5. Also, a new cover would be ideal. I know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but this one really could have a more catchy one.

I loved the end of the book and how Keth was able to communicate with his dad through dreams. Again though, I would have enjoyed a little more detail before this event.

Another great aspect about this book is that it really makes you consider all of the social stigmas there are in life. What would life be like if we lived more like the "aliens". It had me thinking about the Native Americans and how we invaded their land and exiled them, as well as the racism that occurs within our culture still. The concept of homosexuality was touched on as well and done beautifully.

If you like Ender's Game, you'll love Relocated

For me there is a fine line between good science fiction, the kind that has all the futuristic elements we sci fi fans love so much, and great science fiction. A great science fiction book has to engage me on a more emotional level. It still has to have all those futuristic elements, action and conflict, but I want to feel like the character rises above the setting and would keep me turning the pages even if he or she were pulled out of that story and dropped into another. Relocated by Margaret Fieland fits into "great science fiction" category for me. I knew from the first page that this was going to be a good read, she hooked me with the scene at the space port, making me want to learn more about this world of mind-reading aliens and the conflict between them and humans. Without shoving it in your face, Fieland's novel addresses issues like racism, bullying, love and loss. Fourteen-year-old Keth is a character that will engage readers his age, but has a maturity and wisdom that kept me from becoming bored. Keth is uprooted from his life on Earth and moved by his dad to the planet Aleyne, where he learns his dad has been keeping secrets from him about his past and about Keth's heritage. Keth begins to suffer from headaches and hear voices in his head, the first indication that he may not be 100% human. The information that his dad has withheld from him leads to conflict, and Keth finds a mentor in and Aleyne man who knew his father from way back. When the Alyne terrorist kidnap his father's friend, Keth tries to rescue him and things get out of hand. Fieland escalates the conflict from page one on with a level of skill that any writer should envy. I can't wait to read her next book (which I think just came out)!

About the Author

Peter Hawkins is Professor of Leadership at Henley Business School and founder and emeritus Chairman of Bath Consultancy Group and chairman of Renewal Associates. He is also visiting professor in Leadership and Change at the University of Bath School of Management and in Executive Coaching at Oxford Brookes University School of Management.� Over the last 30 years he has worked with many leading companies internationally, co-designing and facilitating major change and organizational transformation projects and coaching Boards and Leadership Teams.

Most helpful resource in a long time

I have read many books on leadership and have concluded over time that leading teams effectively is the skill most required of leaders and indeed the skill that is missing in leadership development programs. How does one learn what is required in order to lead teams effectively?
Peter Hawkins has done a great job in pulling together helpful frameworks that will give readers new foundations upon which to build their skills. His pragmatic and well researched approach gives the reader insights which he has gained from many years in doing just what he writes about- coaching leadership teams. His writing style is engaging using examples and anecdotes to illustrate learning points. Team coaches will recognise useful overlaps with other prominent team based writers such as Hackman and Katzenback. Lovers of Gestalt and narrative approaches will be also be rewarded. For those that have been or have coached excellent team leaders, this book will help explain why they were so good. For others this may be ground breaking in terms of developing new aspirations for their endevours.

"Systemic team coaching is a process by which a team coach works with a whole team, both when they are together and when they are apart, in order to help them improve both their collective performance and how they work together, and also how they develop their collective leadership to more effectively engage with all their key stakeholder groups to jointly transform the wider business." (page 60)

Hawkins's "outside in" method first asks about "who the team is there to serve and what those people need and want from the team" (pg. 34) vs. focusing on the team itself and then later looking at client and other stakeholder perspectives as an afterthought.

Hawkins also describes the unique coaching needs of management teams, project teams, virtual teams, client or customer account teams, and boards. From there he discusses how to find good team coaches and appropriately review their work, and how to develop and supervise team coaches. He ends with a section on method, tools and techniques, including a description of the Team 360 assessment process.All of this is wrapped up in Hawkins's hope that systemic coaching will make a difference in the world:

"In serving the organization I need to ensure that the work with the individual or team is not an end in itself, but is enabling that individual and team to more effectively lead and manage the organization through its next phase of development so that organization can fulfill its potential and make a better contribution to the wider world...the current nature of world challenges demands that all human beings think and act in new ways." (pg. 208)

Leadership Team Coaching is THE book I have wanted to see written in the last few years; It has so much potential to guide team coaching practice. I anticipate that it will become a benchmark guide for this emerging field. It will certainly be my benchmark!

As with other works, Leadership Team Coaching is a book packed with insight, ideas, concepts and 'gifts' that you can take, shape and apply in your own way as you work wtih Leaders and Leadership teams. Peter Hawkins brings together numerous influences in this work from his own wide reading, experience and practice. At first glance some of the models or frameworks seem so simple and can be 'simply' applied, and yet mastering each aspect and understanding the space that can be created as a coach in the team context will keep me busy for a long time yet.

Rather than being a 'how to do it' guide, this book offers perspectives, tools and techniques that can be integrated with your unique practice, adding substantially.

This Book is a MUST for All Newbies!!!

Most (though not all) accounting textbooks tend to be dull, verbose, and poorly organized. This phenomenon often makes new students to accounting feel overwhelmed and confused. HAVE NO FEAR! If you are looking for a short, direct, super-clear, quick-and-dirty, no-nonsense 'handbook' to introductory accounting principles, GET THIS BOOK! Use it to supplement your Accounting 101 class. In fact, this little tome is SO good, I actually ended up using it instead of our regular class text (by McQuaig). A+++++++++

Highly recommended for Accounting 101

I was taking an Accounting 101 course, and found many of the principles and equations being taught in the text to be confusing. If this sounds like you, then get this book. Everything is presented clearly and concisely, and it coincided with each chapter in my text book rather well.

I ended up with a B in the course, and I'm sure it would have been a C (or worse) without this book.

Four stars because there isn't an index, though.
