Corba From Dummies. . . .

It was very hard to find one thing good about this book and the only thing good about this book is that it is a Dummies book. I have bought Dummies books in the past and have found them to be very helpful, but not this time! If I could have given this book a lower review than 1, I would have given it. I have spent many frustrated hours trying to figure out the code, that does not work. Every chapter is like an uphill battle, trying to get the code to work. Didn't anyone test the code before the book was published?
The authors take a lot of things for granted. They assume that you know a lot of C++, for instance, and expect you to be experienced at this and be able to do many of the examples from the book, and automatically know what to do. They also skip over important details and I almost feel like I have to read the Authors mind to figure out what they are up to. There are so many holes left in each explanation. I have never seen so many holes and empty spaces left in a book! The authors fail to take you step by step. This book is not for beginners and is more for people who have Corba experience. Why do they call it a dummies book?
I was having so much trouble that I thought that I would E-mail the author. The dummies books, that I have, give you the authors E-mail in case you have problems. Unlike other Dummies books the Authors had left their E-mail address out so that the reader could not contact them, I wonder why? I have contacted the publishers and they sent me John's discussion group which, needless to say, did not work! I got some kind of error message and could not leave a message for him. The allocated time registration to use Orbix is too short to finish the book and I have to continually renew it. Which is a real nuisance.
One good way to get turned off Corba in a hurry is attempting to read this book. Another good thing, I just remembered about the book is the cartoons. Dummies cartoons are always funny and they urged me to keep trying to figure out this book. At least I could get a laugh in between the times when I was thoroughly frustrated with this book.
If I could return this book, I would.

Spare your time and nerves...

This book is neither intuitive nor funny... The information is not presented in steps, many things are just cludged together. And the lame attempts at being funny get on your nerves after first couple of pages. I wish i would keep the receipt - i would definitely return this one...

Best math prep for the SAT/ACT

Peterson's has the best SAT/ACT prep books, and this one tops the list.
It's just math....an explanation, then some exercises to test your skills in each area. You can take the diagnostic test at the beginning of each section to see if you need more study in that area or not.
There's no extra reading to do, and it's very well organized. I use it
with all my students.

Does not reflect the SAT at all!

I bought this book hoping to get some practice for the math section of the SAT. Turns out that I made a huge mistake. Heres why:

Let me start by acknowleging the good part of the book. It gives you a very detailed explanation of how to do a lot of the math problems. It gives you a diagnostic test, exercises, and retests for each chapter. That is why it deserves at least 1 star.

However, I did not like this book because it had irrelevant parts to it. For example, the book starts off "teaching" you how to do simple arithmetic problems like "1+2" or "3x2". it then progresses into harder topics. There were plenty of mistakes. For example, lets say an answer was 3. A mistake would look like this: A)3 B)1 C)3 D)4 E)5. Also, don't get tricked by the "3 full length practice math tests" that is stated on the cover. They give you 30 minutes to do 25 math problems. Normally, I would finish 25 math problems in the 30 minutes that are alloted. In this book, I finished the 25 problems in 20 minutes! Either I am REALLY REALLY improving or the problems are just too easy! For each test, they devote 1 ENTIRE section to grid ins. They give you 30 minutes to do 10 grid in problems, and 10 only!!! I finished in 10 minutes.

Overall, this book has some editing problems. It does not reflect the SATs at all! I mean, come on, does the SAT actually give you 1 entire section for grid in problems?

About the Author
Dorothy Barnhouse is the coauthor of the Heinemann title What Readers Really Do. She has built her professional life around her love of reading and writing. A freelance editor and writer for many years, she began teaching through a fellowship at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. She is currently a literacy consultant working in elementary, middle, and high schools in New York City and across the country. Dorothy also teaches graduate and undergraduate writing workshops and has received several grants for her writing, including one from the New York Foundation for the Arts. Vicki Vinton is a literacy consultant and writer who has worked in the New York City public schools and in districts around the country for over fifteen years. Wonderful

I never felt comfortable with the traditional ways of teaching annotation and monitoring comprehension (e.g., questions, connections, etc.). They seemed too unlike what good readers *actually* do when reading and too cumbersome. They keep students outside of the text.

This book, on the other hand, presents a strategy that encourages students to really dig into a text, to struggle with meaning making, and to monitor their comprehension in a way that feels much more authentic and seamless. There are fewer vocabulary words to teach--another thing that can get between the student and the act of meaning making. All you have to remember is "What do I know?" "What do I wonder?" "What patterns am I noticing?"

I used the strategies with my 9th graders this year, and I love the results I have gotten.

Readers Who Teach

Dorothy Barnhouse and Vicki Vinton have written a generous, practical book, fascinating not only for educators but for all who are interested in the ways that readers make meaning. What Readers Really Do presents a holistic, text-centered approach to the teaching of reading, focusing on the ways in which we create connections and the ways that writers lead us to these understandings. I found it to be a truly heartening book. At a time when so much of the way we teach is compartmentalized, What Readers Really Do looks instead at the mysteries inherent in good writing, the importance of experiencing and learning from those moments of "not knowing", and the ways we can help students to look deeply to gain meaning from the books they read.

This book will give you a great deal to think about concerning the process of reading. It is a book all teachers should read to understand what it means to truly read. It will help you explain the process to parents so that they can better support their child's reading.
