Witchfinder in the West

This second Sir Edward Grey, Witchfinder collection (After Witchfinder: In the Service of Angels) is just an incredible comic. In the afterword writer John Arcudi says it took him years to put this series together, and I believe it because it has a maturity and depth of vision that you don't find in something spontaneous. That vision is combined with stunning and patient art, of a level of quality that has all but disappeared in modern comics. This is a series that takes its time. And rewards heavily.

Taking its name from the old Cowboy ballad "Darling Clementine," the series "Lost of Gone Forever" takes the British Victorian occult detective Sir Edward Grey, Royal Witchfinder to the Queen, and sticks him in the middle of the American Old West, complete with buckskinned sidekick and Indian magic. If this sounds in any way cheesy or forced, believe me it is not. Much more than a simple fish-out-of-water story, Sir Edward Grey's sojourn in the American Wild West forces him to tackle a fundamental question: how can a Christian do battle with supernatural forces, and still retain his faith?

There are two conflicts in this series. The first is the physical battle between the supernatural witch-child Eris with her legions of the living dead against the human duo of Grey and his companion Morgan Kaler, the aforementioned buckskin-wearing cowboy. In this fight, the winner is never in question. Eris can launch wave after wave of undead armies will little worry, while Grey and Kaler can only respond by putting lead bullets in bodies that no longer feel pain.

The second battle is waged on a spiritual plane. The oil-and-water of Indian Shamanism mixed with Western Christianity causes an imbalance in Eris' chief ally. She resurrected the spirit of the Indian shaman Kaipa and put it in the body of a dead Christian priest. So now Kaipa is both of these faiths, and yet neither. He has tremendous power, but no moral guide on how best to use it. Meanwhile Grey, a devout Christian, refuses to acknowledge Eris and Kaipa's power source, convinced that Eris is nothing more than just another witch to be taken down.

And then there is Kaler, who adds one of the most interesting themes. Kaler is a hard-edged cynic who believes in nothing, which ends up being his greatest strength. Eris is a goddess who needs people to believe in her. Eris can hurt him, but not conquer him. Because he does not believe in her.

I loved how Mignola and Arcudi explored these themes. It makes Sir Edward Grey a much richer character than someone like Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane, who uses his Christian faith as a blunt weapon and is unshakeable in his conviction no matter how many African gods he encounters. When I read the first Witchfinder series I thought that Sir Edward Grey was going to be fun, but a one-note character. "Lost and Gone Forever" shows that Mignola and Arcudi are developing him beyond his origins.

The art in "Lost and Gone Forever" is stunning. John Severin is an artist from the golden age of EC comics, and his draftsmanship is astounding. This kind of fine art-inspired line work has all but disappeared from modern comics, which are more focused on style than just good drawing. Dave Stewart's perfect coloring brings out every fine line and gives them depth and feeling. With his zombies and horror elements, Severin seems to have a bit of Richard Corbin in him, although give the eras when they began it is probably more correct to say that Corbin as a bit of John Severin in him.

Severin's prairie scenes are also particularly impressive. In one shot, Grey finds himself in the Indian Happy Hunting Ground, and as he surveys the idyllic landscape he is awestruck and can only say, "Blessed M'Lord, it's so beautiful." I cannot help but agree.

The Wicked Witch of the (Old) West

Sir Edward Grey is on the trail of a Lord Glaren which leads him to the old West, Utah, where the trail ends. But the small town he winds up in has come under hard times. Their church burned down with the churchfolk inside and some say Satan himself came to take the congregation to Hell. Grey finds himself caught in a web cast by an evil witch who is bringing the dead back and manipulating the native American's mythology to suit her purpose. Witches, zombies, stone dogs, and living gods - say howdy to Witchfinder Book 2.

Mike Mignola and John Arcudi team up to script an excellent second volume from their Witchfinder series with Sir Edward Grey as the consummate hunter of witches, par excellence. They're joined by John Severin whose artwork is well suited to the dry deserts of Utah and who does a fine job of depicting the various supernatural entities Grey and his friends meet along the way. The landscapes he draws are superb and he does a fine job of re-creating the ramshackle wooden towns of this time too.

A great character in the form of Kaler is introduced in the book and serves as an invaluable aid to Grey as he finds adapting from the misty streets of London to the dusty trail of the American countryside, difficult. Kaler is an American version of Grey, though without the direction of Grey's service to the Crown and his own personal demons of his departed wife. His inclusion and development as a well-rounded character is what gives the book extra kick, especially for this reader.

"Lost and Gone Forever" is a more action packed story than the first volume but no less brilliant a book. Fans of Mignola and spooky comics will love it.

Sadly disappointed in both writing and art

I really enjoyed the first volume of Witchfinder, "In the Service of Angels", with art by Ben Stenbeck. There were parts that could have been better paced, drawn, or fleshed out but my lingering thoughts on it after reading it were positive, interesting, dark and haunting. Stenbeck has a very Mignola-derivative style, and I am a HUGE fan of Mignola's art. He may be my favorite artist of all time. So Stenbeck's path hit me very right.

With this volume, art by John Severin, it just never looked like something I could get into. It felt less mystical, less magical, more wild-west and less dreamy. It's personal preference of course, but I did not ever get a good vibration from what I saw. Also, I thought Mignola's storytelling was missing something this go around. I don't know if it was because of the art affecting me, or if he just had a misstep.

But as a whole, I felt a bit like I had wasted my money and time on this volume, and was disappointed. There were a couple of excellent moments, but the rest was just not something I would recommend or come back to.

About the Author

Cheryl Bodiford McNeil, Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychology in the Clinical Child Program at West Virginia University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Florida. Dr. McNeil's clinical and research interests are focused on program development and evaluation, specifically with regard to abusive parenting practices and managing the disruptive behaviors of young children in both the home and school settings. She has authored two books (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy and Short-Term Play Therapy for Disruptive Children), a continuing education package (Working with Oppositional Defiant Disorder in Children), a psychotherapy DVD for the American Psychological Association (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy), and a classroom management program (The Tough Class Discipline Kit). In addition, Dr. McNeil has published numerous research articles and chapters related to the importance of intervening early with young children displaying disruptive behaviors. She is the wife of Dr. Daniel McNeil, a Professor of Psychology, and the mother of two school-aged boys.

Toni Hembree-Kigin, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in independent practice in Mesa, Arizona. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Florida. Dr. Hembree-Kigin's clinical and research interests are focused on young children with disruptive behavior problems and those in shelter and foster care. She has authored three books (Mental Health Interventions with Preschool children, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, and Short-Term Play Therapy for Disruptive Children) and a continuing education package (Working with Oppositional Defiant Disorder in Children). Dr. Hembree-Kigin designed the therapeutic milieu in the group home and shelter care for the Child Crisis Center East Valley based on the PCIT model. In addition, Dr. Hembree-Kigin has published numerous research articles and chapters related to the importance of intervening early with young children displaying disruptive behaviors. She is the wife of Dr. Timothy Kigin, school psychologist, and mother of three school-aged children.

Excellent resource for parenting challenging children

Our 4 year old son is at times explosive, disrespectful, sassy, you name it. I've gotten, read and tried Love & Logic, the Explosive Child, the Strong Will Child, and several others. Those books have some great ideas, but this is the only book which actually is addressing the problem and it is because it is written for therapists and not parents. This book seeks to teach therapists how to teach parents the Parent-Child Interaction Therapy and as such it has specific detailed directions of what to say to parents and what to teach parents. It is dense. But if by education or training you are use to reading "manuals", it is easily digestible and because of the format it gives you EXACTLY the things you need to implement to parent difficult children. For instance, the first section has the parent spend 5 minutes of child-directive play and gives specifics of what the parent should do and not do. Don't ask questions; give any commands; or criticize or be sarcastic. Do implement PRIDE: Praise (one positive statement every 30 seconds), Reflect (repeat what the child says--everything during that five minutes if it is appropriate) Imitate (do similar things in the play), Describe (say what they are doing); and E (Enjoy or Enthusiasm). 5 minutes sounds like nothing, but try doing that for five minutes and its exhausting. But as the book says this "overtraining" makes it come natural to do this positive training at other times. But this book isn't about coddling. It expects appropriate behavior and has a consequence for inappropriate behavior. It takes an authoritative (not permissive and not authoritarian) approach. That is my "goal" but because of behavior problems and stress (son has a chronic life-shortening illness), I don't always do my best. This book is basically a therapists guide which a dedicated parent willing to put in the hard work can use. The behavior change for BOTH of us was immediate and I actually ended the first day liking spending time with my dearly beloved son again.

Ponderous, detailed, somewhat obscure

Throughout history there are characters who aren't at the center of the stage, but who are important supporting players in the world's affairs. Gideon Welles was one of these: he served as Lincoln's Secretary of the Navy during all of the Civil War, and oversaw the expansion of that service from a tiny pre-war, almost exclusively sail-driven fleet into a large, steam-driven armada, sufficient to defeat Confederate ironclads, hunt down commerce raiders, and blockade all of the South. It was a monumental task, and Welles proved equal to it after a shaky start.

Who was this man, how did he come to prominence, and why did Lincoln appoint him to the post? Those are the questions that the author, John Niven, attempts to answer. Welles was primarily a newspaperman, though he did work in various government posts also, including one stint in the Department of the Navy during the Mexican-American War. However, he'd essentially been elected to no offices prior to being appointed Navy Secretary, and he'd only held that one appointment in the Navy Department prior to the appointment.

He did have one singular qualification from Lincoln's point of view, though. He was pretty much a founding member of the Republican Party, having broken with the Democrats over various issues relating to slavery. This gave him entree into Lincoln's circle of advisers and friends, and when Welles entered, he impressed people, and was on the list to be appointed to a cabinet post as a result.

I generally enjoyed this book, within limits. The author is a historian, a specialist in mid-19th Century political history, and it shows. Unfortunately, though the book is reasonably well-written, the author doesn't do much for context. So Andrew Jackson appears, for instance, without an introduction, and Welles at various times either belongs to or opposes political groups called "Loco-Focos", "Barnburners", and "Hunkers". The author never bothers to really explain any of that, so you're expected to know what a Loco-Foco was, on your own.

Those misgivings aside, this is *the* biography of Welles, and it belongs in the library of anyone interested in the Lincoln administration and the era.

It was 34 years ago I first picked up this book and have been a fan of John Niven ever since. This book is the best in the distinguished list of Dr. Niven;s writings. Gideon Welles moves from editor to politician to powerful figure in the Lincoln administration and we follow him as fellow travelers on this voyage. This is one book well worth the price for your library.

Excellent, Readable Biography of Lincoln's Navy Secretary

John Niven sheds some light on Gideon Welles, the 19th century politician best known for his service as Abraham Lincoln’s Navy secretary. But Welles was far more than that as this book illustrates. A leading Jacksonian editor based out of Connecticut, Welles was always a competent and respected member of Lincoln’s Cabinet who also served as a close adviser to Andrew Johnson as well. Welles also helped launch the GOP. Niven sheds some light on this obscure figure and his role as a Jacksonian Democrat who opposed slavery, often clashing with “doughface” Isaac Toucey (who served in Polk’s and Buchanan’s Cabinets and really needs a biography) over the party’s direction in Connecticut. Besides offering a good account of his leading the Navy during the war, Niven is also able to shed some light on Welles’ personal life and his various writings before and after the war, including his efforts to show Lincoln as a strong figure. The book is helped by a good use of primary sources, including Welles’ diaries. This is one of the best biographies of a 19th century American politician offering new insights in a readable fashion. Highly recommended.

Great Nursing School Book

I had to purchase this book for Nursing school. The price was best on Amazon vs other places. The book was good for what we used it for - we had to study it in it's entirety over a 4 week period - so I used this book and it's coordinating website to learn medical terms. We had to lean it very fast, which I wouldn't recommend to anyone, but I made an "A" on all my tests each week! It is definitely a book I will use again and again for reference.

I like how each chapter reviews learned terms from previous chapters - repetitiveness helps me learn things better. The book starts off by teaching you basic "root" words in the first few chapters and then moves on to explore a new medical field with each new chapter (example: Oncology, Urology, Neurology, etc.) and terms that would most likely be seen with each. Plus it contains plenty of written exercises to practice putting terms together or being able to recognize terms in the medical field by breaking down their "root" words. Overall, I think this was a good purchase (even if it was required reading for our school).

Was cheap for a text book and it was exactly the one I needed. It had some writing in it but it was answers to some of the questions. (Not complaining )
The layout of this book was super easy to read and super easy to work with with the program I'm using to take this class.
The free shipping that came with me buying this book was wonderful too.

When I bought this book, I was brand new in the medical world. I hadn't a single clue about any of terms associated with health care. However, after taking the class associated with this book, I feel immensely more confident in my ability to use medical terminology on a daily basis. This book is essentially teaching another language. Although, I am not fluent in this new language, this book definitely gave me a solid foundation to build upon.

For me the eyeopener was the use of endometrics (measures that come from within the system being measured) to evaluate one's business strategy.

Have a strategy, create a framework and be selective in measuring and reporting. And even more important, be modest to contribute success to specific actions or departments.

Which all reminded me of the old COPC acronym: CUIKA Collected, Usable, Integrity, Knowledgeable, Actions

About the Author
Dr. Harold F. Hunter is the chancellor and president-emeritus of Trinity College of the Bible and Theological Seminary. His ministry experiences are diverse and wide-ranging. These include twenty-eight years as a pastor, including the 5100-member North Jacksonville Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Florida. During a fifteen-year span, he served full-time as an evangelist in hundreds of revivals and crusades. From 2005 to 2015, Dr. Hunter was the president of Trinity Seminary. He is the author of six books and frequently serves as a featured pulpit guest for Bible conferences, deeper life seminars and evangelistic events.

Amazing!

Dr. Hunter has done an amazing Job at going in depth with this book. every day i'm reading it i understand so much more of God's word than I ever thought possible. he goes verse by verse through romans and talked about each part to help the reader understand the culture and how the ways things differred at the time of the writing of the book of romans.
