About the Author

Cheryl Bodiford McNeil, Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychology in the Clinical Child Program at West Virginia University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Florida. Dr. McNeil's clinical and research interests are focused on program development and evaluation, specifically with regard to abusive parenting practices and managing the disruptive behaviors of young children in both the home and school settings. She has authored two books (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy and Short-Term Play Therapy for Disruptive Children), a continuing education package (Working with Oppositional Defiant Disorder in Children), a psychotherapy DVD for the American Psychological Association (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy), and a classroom management program (The Tough Class Discipline Kit). In addition, Dr. McNeil has published numerous research articles and chapters related to the importance of intervening early with young children displaying disruptive behaviors. She is the wife of Dr. Daniel McNeil, a Professor of Psychology, and the mother of two school-aged boys.

Toni Hembree-Kigin, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in independent practice in Mesa, Arizona. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Florida. Dr. Hembree-Kigin's clinical and research interests are focused on young children with disruptive behavior problems and those in shelter and foster care. She has authored three books (Mental Health Interventions with Preschool children, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, and Short-Term Play Therapy for Disruptive Children) and a continuing education package (Working with Oppositional Defiant Disorder in Children). Dr. Hembree-Kigin designed the therapeutic milieu in the group home and shelter care for the Child Crisis Center East Valley based on the PCIT model. In addition, Dr. Hembree-Kigin has published numerous research articles and chapters related to the importance of intervening early with young children displaying disruptive behaviors. She is the wife of Dr. Timothy Kigin, school psychologist, and mother of three school-aged children.

Excellent resource for parenting challenging children

Our 4 year old son is at times explosive, disrespectful, sassy, you name it. I've gotten, read and tried Love & Logic, the Explosive Child, the Strong Will Child, and several others. Those books have some great ideas, but this is the only book which actually is addressing the problem and it is because it is written for therapists and not parents. This book seeks to teach therapists how to teach parents the Parent-Child Interaction Therapy and as such it has specific detailed directions of what to say to parents and what to teach parents. It is dense. But if by education or training you are use to reading "manuals", it is easily digestible and because of the format it gives you EXACTLY the things you need to implement to parent difficult children. For instance, the first section has the parent spend 5 minutes of child-directive play and gives specifics of what the parent should do and not do. Don't ask questions; give any commands; or criticize or be sarcastic. Do implement PRIDE: Praise (one positive statement every 30 seconds), Reflect (repeat what the child says--everything during that five minutes if it is appropriate) Imitate (do similar things in the play), Describe (say what they are doing); and E (Enjoy or Enthusiasm). 5 minutes sounds like nothing, but try doing that for five minutes and its exhausting. But as the book says this "overtraining" makes it come natural to do this positive training at other times. But this book isn't about coddling. It expects appropriate behavior and has a consequence for inappropriate behavior. It takes an authoritative (not permissive and not authoritarian) approach. That is my "goal" but because of behavior problems and stress (son has a chronic life-shortening illness), I don't always do my best. This book is basically a therapists guide which a dedicated parent willing to put in the hard work can use. The behavior change for BOTH of us was immediate and I actually ended the first day liking spending time with my dearly beloved son again.

This book is well written and gives step by step guidance toward the implementation of PCIT. I found it invaluable in working with a mother and her son diagnosed with ADHD and ODD.
