About the Author

Ben Turok is a visiting professor at the University of KwaZulu Natal, a member of the South African parliament, and the head of political education for the African National Council. He has been a member of the Liberation Movement for many decades, was an accused in the 1956 Treason Trial, and was in exile for 25 years, returning to South Africa in 1990. He is the author of 19 books on Africa’s development in economics and politics.

Appears to avoid the REAL controversy!

This little volume appears to completely side-step the crippingly horrific malaise of theft & corruption in South Africa, that is the real controversy. How different mightn't the economic growth of the country have been without the wholesale plundering that has been in evidence over the last decade and a half. The resulting non-delivery of basic services and facilities and the inevitable deterioration in investor confidence has all contributed to exacerbating the atrocious levels of poverty and deprivation that pervade South African society. All the "development strategies in the world" are not going to be much good unless this fundamental flaw is dealt with decisively. Justice needs to be seen to be done: the crooks brought to book, the stolen "monies' repaid and ALL the nation's people allowed to benefit and grow.

More Than You Wanna Know

Whoa! There is a whole expensive universe out there just waiting to claim your hard-earned dollar. Well, if you're forced to swallow supplements at a doctor's instruction, before you down anything, get this book. It tells you of the downsides as well as upsides of a whole range of vitamins. Usually, eating lots of leaves and exercising will correct everything afflicting your body... But, in the odd cases where the body is severely deficient or not manufacturing what is needed, this book will help you draw the line between enough and too much.

So, before you drop two hundred pieces of Feta on A through Zinc, look this book over. It's a worthy investment.

Great book for anyone wishing to learn about the vital ...

Great book for anyone wishing to learn about the vital role vitamins and minerals play in the health of the cells. The book contains short self-tests after each chapter to see if you're understanding the material. Easy to understand illustrations throughout. I appreciated the way it explained each vitamin and mineral and that each chapter builds upon the previous chapter. The author also covered the lower and upper limits for each one. Lots of useful info. I refer to it often as a quick reference.

Anique Afshan Newaz's BEST OF BANGLADESHI CUISINE: SELECTED RECIPES FROM TAYYEBA HUQ'S SHASTHYA, KHADYA O' RANNA is an authentic and thorough title on Bangladeshi cuisine in the English language, where good English language titles on the subject are very rare.
During my recent trip to Dhaka, I was lucky to find only one copy of the title in the bookstore (Omni Books) at Zia International Airport. I've just finished browsing it and believe it truly represents Bengali Muslim cooking. The author has got all the credibilty (such as being a niece of the original author and educated in the USA and knows research and writing). Moreover, the FOREWORD by Nobel Laureate Prof. Mohammad Yunus has added value to the title.
I would highly recommend it for anyone (Bangladeshi immigrants in Europe and North America) interested in Bangladeshi cuisine.

Wonderful variety of classical Bengali Recipes

This is an excellent introduction to Bengali cuisine. As a busy student away from home, I often yearn for my mom's cooking. This helps me recreate the wonderful memories and aromas and delicious foods that remind me of home.

TYPES OF FOOD: It has a great variety of recipes, such as appetizers and snacks, beverages, soups, rices, breads, meats, seafoods, and of course, desserts. Recipes vary from Halim to Biriyani to vegetarian options and chutneys.

RECIPES: The recipes are easy to follow and come out delicious, with the spices carefully selected, delicately balanced, and not overpowering. The pictures are very accurate and inspire one to try the recipes. They are a refreshing and healthier alternative to foods that are otherwise a bit rich and unhealthy.

EASE OF USE: The recipes are pretty easy to understand. Some do take quite some time to master, but the results are always worth it.

BOOK QUALITY: Beautiful, heavy paper with high gloss and nice binding (for the hardcover version).

All in all, it's worth every penny!

This book makes cooking Bangladeshi cuisine an easy task. It is thoughtfully written, taking complex historic procedures and simplifying them for those not native to this cooking. The recipes are layered with delicious flavors and are quite delicious!

Bison Are Back! From increasing profit numbers on the balance sheet of producers, to an increasing number of new bison producers, the industry is in a resurgence mode.

This lean volume from the National Bison Association and the Canadian Bison Association captures the essence of the bison business today and provides solid information on nearly every facet of the industry. These concepts are explained clearly and concisely for the reader in 16 short chapters. The information in each chapter builds on previous ones by following a logical sequence of subjects needed to understand and create a successful bison business today.

Beginning with an outline of an historical perspective on the animal and the industry, the book puts the most important section, Creating a Successful Business Plan, right up front. The following sections of the book talk about building the business from the ground up. The underlying foundation of the successful bison producer is clearly stated as the health of the land resource being managed. In turn, managing the animals day to day in a healthy, humane and low stress manner builds on this foundation to create the basis for the production of a healthy, desirable product for the consumer, and profit for the producer.

The handbook follows with several chapters which outline the final finishing, and marketing of the product to the consumer. The full range of diversity in terms of products and their promotion is explained with real life examples and the elements needed to create a successful marketing plan.

Concluding chapters deal with the regulatory realities of the business and provide plenty of enlightenment on further sources of information for the reader.

This informative and well written handbook was enjoyable reading and well worth the investment.

For a beginner

The book is VERY basic starting out. If you have raised animals, 4H or others you have these basics of husbandry, pasture and graze practices, and land needs down pat, this book is no help. If you have been in business, you know how to write a business plan,(if you don't I'll write one for you for a small fee), but you don't need this book and Business 101 thru the first 30 pages or so. Finally into specific information about Bison buying and selling, what to look for, Bison specific health issues and so on get down to the needed information you bought the book for. Much of it is almost word for word out of any Ag science course on any college campus. If you took these classes in school this book does little more than put it all together in one handy informational source. Good book for the beginner in Ag and beginner in Business, but who among us is going to go into raising Bison without some background in Business and the Livestock arena? I got about 75% of same information from multiple sources on the internet from the various Bison association sites, the NBA among them.

This was a very comprehensive and well researched book on raising Bison in the USA or Canada. I highly recommend it to anyone considering raising Bison or currently raising Bison.
