Livingston argues that neither the inspirationist nor rationalistic conceptions can capture the blending of deliberate and intentional, spontaneous and unintentional processes in the creation of art. Texts, works, and artistic structures and performances cannot be adequately individuated in the absence of a recognition of the relevant makers intentions. The distinction between complete and incomplete works receives an action-theoretic analysis that makes possible an elucidation of several different senses of "fragment" in critical discourse. Livingston develops an account of authorship, contending that the recognition of intentions is in fact crucial to our understanding of diverse forms of collective art-making. An artist's short-term intentions and long-term plans and policies interact in complex ways in the emergence of an artistic oeuvre, and our uptake of such attitudes makes an important difference to our appreciation of the relations between items belonging to a single life-work.

The intentionalism Livingston advocates is, however, a partial one, and accomodates a number of important anti-intentionalist contentions. Intentions are fallible, and works of art, like other artefacts, can be put to a bewildering diversity of uses. Yet some important aspects of art s meaning and value are linked to the artist s aims and activities.

About the Author
Paisley Livingston has a B.A. in Philosophy from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University. He is Chair Professor of Philosophy and Dean of Humanities at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. He has held teaching and research positions at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, McGill University, l'Ecole Polytechnique (Paris), Siegen University, The University of Aarhus, Roskilde University Center, The University of Copenhagen, and Zinbin (Kyoto). A Nice Change

I hemmed and hawed about getting this particular edition of Mother Goose rhymes. It was listed "Arnold Lobel Mother Goose" for the Sonlight Kindergarten homeschool curriculum, and although I have three or four various big, hardbound editions of Mother Goose (loved, all of them--and some are loved to pieces), I finally decided to buy a copy of this one. Used, of course.

I began reading it with my daughters this week and right away it was a refreshing change. The illustrations appear much bigger to me, and sometimes they are full page illustrations with space carved out for the rhymes. Many of the standard Mother Goose books have old-fashioned looking ink drawings. Some aren't colored in or filled in.

Arnold Lobel's illustrations are also in the Frog & Toad readers, and the color schemes here are a bit similar in my way of thinking: pretty mellow. I like them. We will still use the other Mother Goose books, but I will be keeping this one in the rotation. (Sidenote: I think my two year old still prefers the Little Golden book editions, though, and I highly recommend them, as the Mickey Mouse and other classic Disney illustrations are just plain cute.)

Final opinion: worth the purchase even if you have other Mother Goose, kids and I all enjoy, and husband was glad to find out it had the Betty Botter tongue twister

The Search is Over for a Mother Goose collection for Toddlers

I struggled with nursery rhymes with my toddler. They LOVE rhyming at that age, yet the book of my youth (you know, the checkerboard covered version) was inappropriate. My child would choose a rhyme by the picture, and often I couldn't honor his selection. The problem with classic Mother Goose is that about a third of them are violent or somehow inappropriate, and another third are sold Olde Englishe as to be incomprehensible to a 3-year old American.

Arnold Lobel's book is perfect on two levels-- it is really well edited. The rhymes are nicely chosen, and he doesn't skimp on stanzas. I think he's filled in some favorites as well-- Little Miss Muffet has a friend scared by another critter, etc. There is some violence, as I believe Mother Goose would be a non-starter without some darkness. The Old Woman in a Shoe "whipped them all soundly and sent them to bed." This always was a bit of a dark poem, but the visual image of the large family in a shoe is engaging enough to love it anyway.

The other great thing, of course, is that we do better than mere visual images with Mr. Lobel. The pictures are AWESOME. Each and every rhyme is illustrated, and there are hundreds. The drawings are charming, and not at all dark. Often, they provide the levity that the rhyme may lack.

We love this book, and it makes a great baby gift.

A less creepy Mother Goose. Good for phonetical learning

I'm not going to read my 17 month old about racism, or violence, etc. Unlike other Mother Goose this is edited a lot more to get the inappropriate stuff down. Kids need to learn rhymes very young to develop the building blocks for reading, this is a good one.

A beautiful, worthwhile read...

This is the most soul-nourishing book I’ve read in a good while. Several times throughout its reading, my heart swelled with gratitude for Eric Butterworth. His words have the power to shift your perspective and enliven your spirit – it did for me…though, I suspected it would, as I’ve experienced this with all his audio lectures. It’s a perfect book to read a few pages from prior to meditation or prayer to set your mood. His words are inspiring, empowering, meditative, and easy to read. I’m so grateful for this book, and it will be one that remains on my Kindle.

FYI: the Kindle version does have formatting issues throughout that can interrupt reading flow. Until this is straightened out, if you come across part of a sentence where the words don’t make sense, it’s because some of the letters of one word are attached to the next word. Once I realized what was going on, I could understand the sentence. I look forward to these ‘issues’ being quickly resolved.

About the Author
John Siegenthaler, P.E., is a mechanical engineering graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a licensed professional engineer, and Professor Emeritus of Engineering Technology at Mohawk Valley Community College. "Siggy", as he is known in the industry, has over 32 of experience in designing modern hydronic heating systems, including those using renewable energy subsystems. He is a hall-of-fame member of the Radiant Panel Association, and a presenter at national and international conferences on heating and building technology. John is principal of Appropriate Designs, a consulting engineering firm in Holland Patent, NY.

Excellent resource for DIYers

Excellent book for a DIYer planning on installing a hydronic radiant system. Gives basically all the information that you need to plan and install a full system. Some of the topics are pretty involved and require some basic math, but the book walks you through everything with great detail. Covers:

1) Determining heating load estimates

2) Required water temperatures and flow rates

3) Pipe installation, including pumps and expansion tanks

4) Several approaches to zoning

5) Laying PEX tube for radiant panels

An engineer's review

The book was very useful. The only drawback was the "Hydronics Design Kit" was not included. This costs an additional $76 from Oikos.com and is referred to many times in the book. Therefore, it is almost a requirement during use of the book.

Best Resource Available

This book is THE resource for any homeowner planning to install radiant floor heat. It is written as a textbook for HVAC students, but it serves equally well as a reference and informative design resource for the average homeowner. John Siegenthaler is recognized by his peers as one of the outstanding radiant heating engineers. I highly recommend this book.

The Little Book of Schiaparelli

Lately there has been a rising interest in Schiaparelli's designs, and this new book is a welcomed addition.
It is a little book as the title implies, but it is well-made and printed on high-quality paper.
The book serves as a concise illustrated introduction to Schiaparelli's design philosophy, but I cannot comment on the text, as I've not started reading it yet.
The book is heavily illustrated with a beautiful mix of archival and contemporary photos showing the garments' beauty and colorfulness.
This is a recommended addition to any fashion library, another highly recommended book is the one recently published by the Metropolitan Museum about Prada and Schiaparelli.

A beautiful little book full of colored photos of some of the most beautiful fashions ever! Elsa Schiaparelli was a genious way before her time. I can't believe I have never heard any of today's stars on the Red Carpet say "I'm wearing vintage Schiaparelli!" I would.
But I'm not a STAR!

About the Author

Sohel Rana is the scientific manager in the Fibrous Materials Research Group at the University of Minho, Guimar�es, Portugal. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in textile technology from University of Calcutta, India, and his master’s degree and Ph.D in fiber science and technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. Dr. Rana is the author of one book, more than 10 book chapters, two keynote papers, and more than 80 publications in various refereed journals and international conferences. Currently, he is editing four books on composites and nanomaterials. He is also an editorial board member and potential reviewer for numerous scientific journals.

Raul Fangueiro is a professor and researcher in the School of Engineering at the University of Minho, Guimar�es, Portugal. He is also the coordinator of the University of Minho’s Fibrous Materials Research Group. He holds a Ph.D in textile engineering, has published more than 120 scientific articles in refereed journals, has presented more than 350 communications in international conferences, and is the author and co-author of 14 technical books and 12 patents. He is a European Textile Platform expert, an editorial board member of several scientific journals, and the coordinator of the FIBRENAMICS International Platform (www.fibrenamics.com).
