Another Cynster matches up with Kit and Jack Hendon's daughter

Lord Michael Cynster and Miss Cleome Hendon learn to work together as full partners to help in this second stage of foiling a plot to blow something, or someone, up in London. Michael is feeling free of society's demands since Sebastian is now engaged, wondering what to do next, when he gets involved with Drake Wolverstone, who he's worked with before. He needs to track down the transporters of the dynamite and the family is acquainted with the Hendon Shipping Company due to their parents beings involved with them in the early 1800's. It's now 1850 and the new generation is working actively to protect and defend. Michael is surprised to find that the Hendon he'll be working with is Cleome, and he gets a little warning from Michael of what her mother had gotten up to during her younger years, but he finds she is a kindred spirit with a surprising mesh of thoughts, ideas and ability to take action. They succeed in their part of the task, with one of the senior people in the plot killed, but they know the spider at the center of the web is still out there, and surmise that it's someone from their world. Drake is reviewing everything with the other four at the end of this book, when Louisa makes her appearance, with information no one else has. An excellent read! It will make better sense if you read the first book in the trilogy - there are recaps here, but it makes more sense in order.

Another Great Book by Stephanie Laurens!

The Devil’s Brood Trilogy features the three children of Devil Cynster from the Bar Cynster series. Devil (Sylvester) and Honoria have three children – two sons and a daughter. The Devil’s Brood Trilogy features Sebastian Cynster (oldest and the heir) in the first book, Michael (second and spare) in the second book and the third and last will feature Louisa (known as Lady Wild). There is a mystery flowing through all three novels and the three Cynster’s each have a hand in a portion of the solution. Someone is plotting against the crown and is planning to blow up something – they don’t know what or who is behind it, but they do know that ten barrels of gunpowder is involved. In the first book Sebastian and Lady Antonia Rawlings discovered where the gunpowder had been and learned that it had left for London. In this book, Michael and Miss Cleome Hendon are tasked with finding where the gunpowder was delivered in London and keeping watch on it to try to follow its target location.

Lord Michael Cynster leads a hedonistic life, but it is beginning to find that lifestyle very unsatisfying. So, when Drake Wolverstone tasks him with locating the gunpowder and following it to its target location, he jumps at the chance. He realizes that the villains can blow up pretty much anything they want to with that much gunpowder. He also knows how dangerous these plotters are because they have so far murdered everyone who has participated in their plot just as soon as their part was finished. No loose ends.

Michael believes that the first step must be to identify who carted the gunpowder into London. Since the transport of gunpowder is highly regulated and monitored and ONLY registered carts and carters can transport it, Michael sets off to determine who those carters were. He goes to Hendon Shipping Company in hopes of speaking with one of the Hendon brothers only to learn that all three of them are out of the country. However, he is taken to the person who runs the company because of their intimate knowledge of the kind of details he needs. My goodness is he surprised when he meets that person -- Miss Cleome Hendon. Oh my – a female running a shipping business. Cleo hears Michael out and says she can indeed help him – but she has conditions for that help. She wants some adventure and guarantees she can identify the carters, but insists that he let her help with the investigation.

So, now we have a typical male who is accustomed to ruling his world and protecting the females in his life, paired with a strong, intelligent woman who wants adventure in a mans world. What could go wrong there!!!

Michael and Cleo investigate, protect each other and even fall in love. What more could you ask for in a wonderful novel. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Then -- we can be off to read the next book and see the grand finale!

Pretty Good (-ish)

Really a solid 3.5. But I have much love and history with SL books so I round up.

I had two major problems with the book. May be spoilery.... consider yourself warned.

Problems:
One: the speed in which the couple hooked up and figured out they were headed for HEA. It's historical fiction, not 2017. Pretty sure they didn't sleep with each other after literally 4-5 days. There's no reason the plot couldn't have suggested it was over at least a week or two, considering they just met.

Two: too much rehashing what we already knew. Gunpowder, 10 barrels, Kent, young irelanders, mastermind, gunpowder, 10 barrels, chartists, mastermind, gunpowder, 10 barrels.... and again, and again. We get it. It's not the Irish or the Chartists.... and it's 10 barrels of gunpowder. It took up a lot of page space.

What I did love:
The heroine. She was kickass. If a little desperate at first for adventure. Her character didn't jive with someone who was waiting for it to come knocking. She was a woman who knew what she wanted and went after it. The couple of times Ms. Laurens tried to make her more traditional I don't think it came off as true to the character, after SL did such a great job of writing her strong-willed. But dear God. Let the girl get another gown at the end of the book.

I liked the set up for the next book and that Drake knows what he's up against. I do hate when nicknames are just thrown in.... I don't remember Michael being referred to as "Huntsman" or Louisa as "Lady Wild" I'm all for nicknames.... their dad's had them, but drop them in previous books such as Marcus or Lucilla's books. At least Lady Wild was mentioned one book ahead of hers.

I thought this was a fun book. I read it on Kindle in just a couple of hours. Glancing over a couple of the rehashing parts. (Again: gunpowder, 10 barrels, mastermind...)

The sex scene was good... and again the heroine is definitely a chip of her parents block.

If you like Stephenie Laurens and the families she's brought to life you should enjoy this... but it's not quite Bar Cynster level good.

About the Author
Ronnee K. Yashon--a nationally known expert in teaching genetics, ethics, and the law on all levels--teaches Law and Genetics at the Experimental College of Tufts University and Boston University School of Medicine. She has a law degree and a background in teaching on the high school, undergraduate, graduate, and law school levels. A recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching and the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award in Illinois, Yashon was the Educational Coordinator for the Wright Center for Science Education at Tufts University, during which time she ran numerous workshops for science teachers and disseminated interdisciplinary lessons at local and national conventions, including NSTA and NABT. A genetics seminar at Ball State University in 1985 sparked her interest in law. She then applied and graduated from law school with a specialty in science and law. A popular speaker at in-service meetings for secondary teachers and for two- and four-year college associations, Yashon has helped bring new ways of presenting old topics. Her case study methodology for introducing bioethics and law in the curriculum uses simple, personalized, and current scenarios that involve the student in decision making. Yashon has presented this case study method all over the country. She has six case study books, including two minibooks that focus on genetics and environmental issues. The implementation of science-oriented law courses in current law school curriculum is a continuing interest in addition to educating jurists and attorneys on the subject of genetics.

Michael Cummings is the author and coauthor of a number of widely used college textbooks, including BIOLOGY: SCIENCE AND LIFE; CONCEPTS OF GENETICS; GENETICS: A MOLECULAR PERSPECTIVE; ESSENTIALS OF GENETICS; HUMAN HEREDITY; and HUMAN GENETICS AND SOCIETY. He has also written articles on aspects of genetics for the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology and has published a newsletter on advances in human genetics for instructors and students. He received his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Northwestern University. His doctoral work, conducted in the laboratory of Dr. R.C. King, centered on ovarian development in Drosophila melanogaster. After a year on the faculty at Northwestern, he moved to the University of Illinois at Chicago, where for many years he held teaching and research positions. In 2003, he joined the faculty in the Department of Biology at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and currently holds the title of Research Professor. His current research interests involve the organization of DNA sequences in the short-arm and centromere region of human chromosome 21. He is engaged in a collaborative effort to construct a physical map of this region of chromosome 21 for the purpose of exploring molecular mechanisms of chromosome interactions. At the undergraduate level, he has focused on teaching genetics, human genetics for non-majors, and general biology to majors and non-majors. He has received awards given by the university faculty for outstanding teaching, has twice been voted by graduating seniors as the best teacher in their years on campus, and has received several teaching awards from student organizations.

A great classic -- Back again

In my forty years as a medical doctor, mostly as a psychiatrist, and my year with Masters & Johnson, I never encountered a book as roundly useful as Dickinson's Atlas. He liked and honored both men and women. His interest in sex was medical, anthropological, ethical, and cheerful. His artistic skills and wide interest render this tome as interesting today as it was 50 years ago. And a joy to read. A true pioneer.

Such an interesting read

I had no idea what squirting was until I was with a partner who was able to accomplish this (every time) about five years. I was so enthralled with it that I immediately looked up how it's done and was able to do this myself pretty quickly. I think that there are a lot of misconceptions about female ejaculation and author R. Leigh has written another great book that takes a look at squirting by giving others a chance to tell their stories. After a bit of fascinating background, there are stories from five different women here who are able to do this and they are varied and all quite interesting. A great read.

Waste of money.

Fascinating topic and knowledgable author but save your money. Barely 40 pages, mostly "fluff" text, only 5 case studies... More of a glorified pamphlet than a book.

Based in Switzerland, Foote was responsible for maintaining the network and forwarding information to the Centre in Russia. Eventually captured by Swiss police, Foote was debriefed in Russia, but managed to escape home to Britain after persuading the Soviets to send him on another mission. This is a fascinating story that illuminates a key part of the secret espionage networks undertaken during World War II.

Real cracking stuff

Foote, alias Jim, former Soviet spy narrates his experiences working for Red Army Intelligence. Firstly, he says how he came to be recruited into the network.This was effected by a woman known by her cover name ` Sonia". Foote succumbed to the charms of Communism at an young age and volunteered to serve in the International Brigade fighting in Spain fighting to save the Republican government from Franco's fascist forces.

Book is filled with several interesting anecdotes of which a few are striking. As international crisis sharpened Centre in Moscow could not bring agents for training. So Foote says he had to learn all the necessary skills to perform his role as a spy of his own account . So he self taught radio telegraphy, microphotography, secret inks, sabotage. Foote managed to bluff Swiss authorities into staying in an apartment where he rigged an aerial for his transmitter for communication with Moscow. Both practices were forbidden for foreigners seeking asylum in Switzerland.

Author had a tough time establishing contact with Centre; host of technical details to be taken care of. Foote has explained the difficulties he experienced while doing so. It represented a challenge to a novice . Communication forms an important component of spy network and also its Achilles heel. If you are unable to pass on to the appropriate authority information gathered the work done by the agents is made futile. Frequencies, call signs used for communication are frequently changed as a safety precaution to beat enemy's radio monitoring squads. Most important source of information was man called Lucy. Not his real name , his identity remained secret for a long time and was established long after the war came to an end. Details on Lucy supplied by author are incomplete, inaccurate. New research has uncovered a lot on this mysterious character. Former was getting reliable, accurate, detailed information from Werther who worked in the German High Command. This he passed on through cut outs, resident director Rado to the author for transmission to Moscow.

Initially , Centre was skeptical about information received considering Lucy as a conduit for feeding for disinformation; too good to be true. Author argues only exigencies of war forced Centre accepting the information at face value, an unorthodox practice going by Soviet espionage standards. Under normal circumstances information is accepted only after thoroughly vetting the source.

What has intrigued me is Lucy's principle source of information `Werther'. But who was Werther? Does it refer to a single man or body which worked against interests of Nazi regime? Author has not been able solve the mystery surrounding Werther. Post war CIA study has done it partially. It represented group of top ranking officers of German High Command who loathed Nazi regime and some of whom were involved in a abortive plot to assassinate Fuehrer. Another point to note speed with which information was reaching Moscow made Soviets to distrust this source. According to author operational decisions were known 24 hrs of it being taken at appropriate HQ's in Berlin. Author has argued this intelligence bonanza helped Soviet regime to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

It was interesting to read how the Swiss discovered the activities of Soviet spy ring. Author is amazed even after its discovery Swiss authorities refused to take action even though latter's actions flouted Swiss neutrality laws. Today we why was this so. Switzerland was also a beneficiary to intelligence passed on by Lucy. Finally it was pressure from Gestapo which forced former to take action.

Before the war came to close Foote came to Moscow to meet his Soviet masters. Author had a tough time in disabusing latter's notion that he was British double agent. The ordeal , author has recalled, left him dry and exhausted. For the first time readers are given a glimpse of life inside iron curtain.He also has harsh words for Centre whose actions he condemns as cynical. Agents are used and then discarded without any consideration. So he decided to quit, for he by this time was utterly disillusioned by Communism. Soviet actions author found to his dismay were no different from those of other Capitalist powers.

I'm glad that author chose to share information with posterity on his life as a Soviet spy. The book contains no source material. Author wrote it down when his memory of what he did remained clear and fresh. Many authors have drawn information from this work to write their epic histories of Soviet secret services. Text is very colorful littered with French and Latin words that often I had to use online resources available to check its meaning. This book is best read in unison V.E Tarrant `s work Red Orchestra.

One of the best books on spying vintage WW2. It was first published years ago but is still relevant. It is also another reason counter intelligece agencies focused on those who fought in Spain for the Republic.

It truly is a handbook for spies

I read recently where someone in the secret service - or somewhere like that, I believe, said all you have to do is to read Handbook for Spies to learn everything you need to know about how to be a spy. As it was written in 1949 I was a bit skeptical. So I decided to read it - not that I intend to become a spy. Not only was it written in 1949 but it takes place during WW II - and even before. While some of the technology is obviously dated, its basic organizational principles ring true and would seem to me to be relevant even today. Well written and organized - although I got a bit lost sometimes with all of the names. And it's all (mostly) true!
