Bourre goes Boo !!!

Hmmm...actually I like this book even though I have grave doubt's about the personality type of its author. Bourre, in his younger years, dabbled in diabolic Luciferianism which involved a filmed animal sacrifice which was enough to turn any sane non psychopath's stomach. This was a shame (and I do not use the word lightly) since Bourre , sociopathic tendencies apart, is quite a good authority on his subject (although he walks a well worn and rather rusty treadmill). In the past, he focused on the over-hyped Highgate 'Vampire' episode, paying a visit to one of its publicity-greedy protagonists David Farrant who, of late, has been very keen to stress he never indulged in Satanism but was a practitioner of Wicca (fake modern witchcraft) although it has never been fully explained whether his 'coven' was Gardnerian or Alexandrian or where it figures in authentic Wiccan history !! His website still boasts a pic of David having 'fun' with his friend Bourre in a page set up by his partner 'Della' . Material on Farrant in Bourre's infamous time on sickening Red Masses and Black Romanticism is somewhat more sinister. But Jean Paul seems to have long ago given up such infantilism (although some of his political interests have been equally alarming). In this curio , he turns his dim spotlight on the Priory (obviously, of Sion, itself a fake group /hoax) and its most exquisite document Le Serpent Rouge, a Hermetic/Alchemical treatise written by my late friend the
Marquis Philippe de Cherisey who, when he wasn't a supreme trickster, was a genius poet. And now, in the wake of Dan Brown's potboiler Da Vinci Code, we have yet another work of fiction (and ALL nonfiction books on the Priory are also often unwitting porkies) which sees Mitterrand (who alas was photographed visiting Rennes le Chateau) seeking a version of the Red Snake which, allied to the Egyptian God Set, offers immortality and the gods know what else. As a Priest of Set myself, and a Grand Hierophant of Memphis-Misraim (of which the novel's Luxor Lodge is clearly meant to be part) I can say this is the usual bull but colorful and entertaining enough. Alas, a luner-tic called Ian Aywin is feverishly propagating a myth from the book (or maybe Bourre followed him ?!?) that Mitterand was the reincarnation of Pharoah Sethi 1 !!! Aywin has been attacked for his views by another eccentric called Marie Roca...who one writer placed next to Bourre for their Celtic etc beliefs !!!! Such is the esoteric world ! And if you want to see a selection of pastiches of Priory leaders and RLC check out the website of artist Christine Maloney who, with her partner Isaac Ben Jacob (who writes ostensibly 'serious' works on RLC) allegedly issued a statement disassociating themselves from Bourre, the Farrant's and sulfurous Satanism!!!!! Now Harvard University Press has announced a six-volume series that will cover the rise, development, and decline of dynastic China from the second century B.C.E. through the early 20th century in an up-to-date, compact, and approachable way. This opening volume by Lewis foretells that the series will become the new gold standard, as the author explains in clear and telling detail how the Qin dynasty ruthlessly defeated a succession of rivals to unify briefly what we now call China in 221 B.C.E. We then see how the succeeding Han dynasty (206 B.C.E.-220 C.E.) combined social engineering and political savvy to institutionalize control and form a 'classical' era parallel to the Greeks and Romans in the West. Good solid foundational book.

Years ago I earned a minor in Chinese history and now I find myself working regularly with colleagues from the PRC. I read this book to re-establish some foundational knowledge of China. This is a fine book to accomplish that.
I intend to follow with other reading on the other major dynasties. Interestingly I have found myself with knowledge that was either omitted or forgotten from the history classes my Chinese friends have taken.
As other reviewers have stated, these narratives need to be read with the consideration that the foundational works are incomplete, and written from perspectives that allowed them to survive up to the present.

Beyond merely a political history of ancient China - a first-rate social history of a crucial era in ancient Asia

With more than a basic familiarity with the early Chinese empires, I was eager to read Lewis' history with the anticipation of gaining a more nuanced and sophisticated understanding of the period. I was not disappointed. While the book is not the chronological sequence of events that is typical of this sort of non-fiction, there is hardly an element of the period that is not discussed.

The opening chapters provide an outstanding overview of Chinese culture and politics during the waning years of the Warring States period , the clarity and detail of the exposition helping to differentiate how dramatic and far-reaching Qin reforms were. Lewis' discussion of the not only how but why the changes in infrastructure Qin Shihuangdi created was exactly what I had hoped to gain from reading the text. Most of the book- about 2/3 - discuss the Han. Here political details largely take a back seat, Lewis instead focusing on the social aspects of the period: urban versus rural communities, religion, kinship, the legal system.

For those interested in a detailed and well-written examination of a seminal period in Chinese history, this would be my first recommendation. For those without some bro background to the time period, this may be a bit detailed, but nonetheless it is an excellent read.

Very good coverage of the subject

This is a very good book covering this time period. It's broken down in to sections (religion, law, literature, etc.) to make it easy to follow, or easy to research just a particular topic. It's well written and easy to read and even enjoyable, which is a tough feat for a history book.

Some minor critiques: I wish the author or publisher had included the Chinese characters next to the pinyin words, so those familiar with the written language could better understand. Also, I think it should have started out with a long chapter giving a linear, chronological history of the Qin and Han periods. That would have made it better to understand some of the subsequent chapters. Reading this from front to back, you still get a good sense of the chronology, but starting out with that would have helped.

I'm looking forward to subsequent books in this series, plus I understand the author is also working on a different project discussing pre-imperial China. That will be nice.

Quite an adventure with this Wolfpack

Wow, this werewolf story has a much different type of twists then I have ever read before. Dominic is a typical dominant alpha wolf, but all the rules in their werewolf society is much different then I have read before. Makes for an interesting twists.
Mia put a mobster away, but they are still after her. She is in the witness protection program. Then she meets the Big Bad Wolf, AKA Dominic and boy does her life begin an adventure.
This story has some major steamy scenes, plus so much action. Dominic and Mia have so much chemistry and their interactions are entertaining and funny, plus so hot. It makes for an enjoyable read. You definitely want to keep reading the serial to find out if she ever gets out from under the mob's thumb.

As soon as I finished this series I had to buy SLADE in the next series !!!'

Wolves & Witnesses! Oh My

The Alpha Wolf's Pet trilogy follows the fledgling relationship between dominant, alpha, werewolf Enforcer Dominic and human lover Mia.

Mia is in witness protection, as she is providing evidence to bring down a Russian mob known as 'Chess'. She's been in witsec a while but is quite useless at keeping to the terms of it and keeps putting herself back in danger. In her latest move, she is relocated, with her new identity (Mia), to a boho cottage on the edge of a private estate and warned in no uncertain terms to keep herself to herself. No more breaking the rules.

Dominic is the owner of said private estate. He's well built, handsome and is instantly attracted to his new neighbour Mia, but he knows she's lying. As the local packs alpha and a well know enforcer to the hierarch Dominic has to make a difficult choice, take her as his pet and risk whatever she is hiding affecting his pack, or walk away.

He takes the risk and finds out the truth and declares he and his pack will support Mia in eliminating the threat to her life and keep her safe while they do so. But of course things aren't that straightforward. Between them, their enemies are plenty and in a twist I didn't see coming, some of their enemies are also in cahoots.

Packs fight, lives are lost and there are revelations galore. This relationship is never easy for Dom & Mia. Everything around them is crumbling and at times causes them to question their relationship. There are rules regarding human relations and Dom has a predestined mate. It's one thing after another, but like a true alpha, he knows what he wants and he is willing to do battle for it. Taking down every wall that's put in his way. All whilst maintaining some vigorous sexy time with his pet Mia.

I did have some issues with this trilogy, there were some language issues, spelling / grammatical issues etc. and sentences not making sense, but it is still very readable and if you can overlook these issues, its a decent story with a lot of thought and detail gone into the plot, the background and the consistency, and an unexpected helping of humour.
