and I'm very glad I did

Had I not been assigned this for my reading club, I wouldn't have finished it. In fact I resolved to toss it half-read when I discovered I couldn't make my book club meeting. Then the meeting changed and I, diligent member, plugged through....and I'm very glad I did. Yes, its overtly sexual and not in a "hot" way. Yes the story is a bit ridic and it does feel like Mr. Robbins is all too proud of himself with every off the wall description, but in the end, the message is good, and by the end you care. I'm glad I read it and I'd recommend it. Especially if you are or ever loved a redhead.

Teasing Wisdom from Absurdity

At least once a year I buy someone a copy of one of Robbins' books as a gift and wait to see if my friend (reads it and) "gets it." Kind of a litmus test.... The "it" of which I speak is the wisdom hidden within Robbins' absurd plots and served up with the author's unique, zany, and wry brand of humor. Often one must piece "it" together like a puzzle spilled on an unswept kitchen floor, sorting the pieces from odd chunks of dog food--and spaghettios--but that's the beauty of it. The fun is in the sorting. I was only slightly disappointed with this particular book, which I'd anticipated given it was his first. Even geniuses recognize they have room to improve and sometimes do, as has this one. Compared with my favorite--Jitterbug Perfume--Still Life has weaker character development and comparably lower plot tension. Yet it contains similar zany twists, incongruous pairings, entertaining flights of fancy through inner and outer space, and takes us back in time to expose the most specious aspects of 1970s American culture. In the end, entering Robbins' world provides readers with something mystics would claim only for meditation--renewal of one's mind--not through stillness but through the mental gymnastics found only in novels like Robbins' Still Life with Woodpecker.

I read this book in my twenties and thought it so profound. Although the author is very clever with wording, and unique description concepts after re-reading it again it is so disgustingly trashy. The only reason I gave it a two is because of the clever descriptive writing.

Improve Your Improv

"Blues Improvisation Complete" lives up to its name. It covers all the bases on learning how to improve your improvisation skills. Although the title may lead you to believe the book only deals in the genre of blues, once I opened the book I realized the book covered all genres. From Latin to rock, I was able to learn new techniques that greatly improved my improvisational skills. Along with the CD which provides several play along exercises, I am now more confident when asked to improvise. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their skills.

Great Introduction to Play Production

Although I have never used this as the primary text for a Theatre class, I have used it to supplement the adopted text. Two factors that make this book excellent are it's structure and the practical projects contained in each section. First, the book is structured chronologically through the process of putting on a play, with each chapter divided into sections on acting, directing and producing, and technical theatre. Because the structure is both chronological and topical, students can see how each job of theatre fits together through the production cycle. Second, even if you're not using this book as a class text, the projects contained in each section give students and teacher a great deal of ideas for how to approach and understand drama. For me, it has been a great help in teaching theatre.

Theatre Art in Action

This is best textbook that I have ever used in high school theatre arts classes. It is very comprehensive and covers most of the material that I cover in my classes. The ancillaries for this book are also excellent. No theatre arts class should be taught with a textbook only, but this one truly covers the basics for beginning students, plus more advanced work for the students who are in upper level classes. I highly recommend this as a textbook for use in high school theatre arts classes.

Big words for dummies

I regret buying this book. No, it's not the money that I paid, I regret the time I spent trying to see if there was something that I could learn in it.

The book is a LOT of verbiage and adjectives. "Massive" or "scalable" finds its place in almost every page. In one page, I found 5 instances of "massive". Here is another extreme example: "Sparse, distributed, persistent multidimensional sorted map." There are at least three occurrences of that exact phrase.

If you want echo the hype that Big Data is great and learn all the jargon that is used in it, this book is for you. If you want to know why, or get down to fundamentals, skip it. There are typos (eg, [...] and factual inaccuracies (eg, the definition of unstructured data.) There are also completely incomprehensible examples under the garb of "code".

The book says little more than "Big Data is lot of data, you got to deal with it bit by bit". And it takes quite a few words to say that. It has no depth. Even when reading the last chapter, you feel that you're reading the introduction.

Glib, rambling and incoherent

First, my background: I am a data and software architect at a company that produces software to handle very large quantities of scientific data. I picked this book up to see if it were worth recommending to other people at my company. (spoiler: it is not)

This book uses a lot of words to say very little and what it does say is often either incomplete to the point of uselessness or flat out wrong. The text is full of buzzwords and jargon, often used incorrectly. The figures are laughably useless (see figure 3-2 for a GREAT example). I think that the problem might be that Hurwitz and co. are business consultants and possibly in the habit of creating poorly researched, content-free, and buzzword-heavy prose for people with a limited depth of knowledge.

I would not recommend this book to anyone. Well, maybe I'd recommend it as a great example of very bad technical writing, but that's about it. I have no idea how other people are giving this five stars. Perhaps they are sockpuppet accounts.

Sadly, I don't know of a good introduction to the myriad of technologies that falls into the "big data" category. Such a book would be difficult to write well since it would have to make many complicated topics understandable to a novice.

I love these books!

The English File series is excellent for teaching English as a second language. I've used it both in the British and American versions and I love it. The texts are engaging and the topics lead to communication in the class. The focus in phonetics, that is not found in many ESL books, helps students learn the correct pronunciation easily and the way the phonemic alphabet is presented, prepares them to look up the pronunciation of new words in the dictionary when they are not in class.

This book makes Marie-Antoinette very much look like a real person (which she was off course) and I like to believe that the story Evelyn Farr tells us is true because it would mean that MA did enjoy real love with a capital L in her short life.

Although designed for use in U.S. Naval training schools, it can be used to great advantage as a basic text in optics in standard technical schools, and it will be immensely valuable even to the layman who desires a knowledge of the fundamentals of optics.

Great Basic primer on optical instruments

Great simple explanation of light and basic optical instruments. Good for someone that wants to know how scopes work, not someone going for a Phd in physics.

The only reason I gave 4 stars is that book is written as a US Navy course, so there is much talk of the navy and naval instruments that many people will find no use for.
