There are covers of records by artists such as Donna Summer, Village People, Teddy Pendergrass and O'Jays as well as lesser-known musicians. Mixed emotions about this book

I have mixed emotions about the book which I did find to be quite comprehensive. The book is nicely divided by the major record labels of the era and then divided by sub-labels when needed. Each section includes a list of the albums in the order of their "matrix" (catalog) numbers, which is really nice.
The bulk of the pages have 16 covers per page. For most of the albums, only the front covers are included. The book does have some pages with the front cover of a single album. I appreciated the task the authors undertook to obtain images of over 2,000 albums. However, I have to mention that the quality of the images of the covers are not consistent. Many of the album covers photographed were visably worn. There didn't seem to be any attempt to reasonably restore the images for the book, probably due to the quantity. Some photographs are also of covers with cut corners (promotional copies). Once again, those images didn't bother me too much due to the quantity of covers in the book. However, there are many photographs of covers taken with the shrink wrap still on the albums. Wouldn't be a problem except those cover images have streak marks from the reflection of the flash! Why didn't they remove the shrink wrap before photographing? Plus, the rule of the day was to remove the shrink wrap from vinyl records to prevent warpage.
On the plus side, the book does include a fun collection of advertisement for the albums. The images of the advertisements are of a better quality than some of the images of the covers, though.
Maybe my expectations are a little unrealistic since I still have many of the albums in the book with covers in relatively good shape. Just seems with the technology available, the images could have been better. Fortunately, the hardcover book is reasonably priced.

Really HEAVY art-book quality book with over 2700 covers shown!

This heavy book of “album covers” weighs in at just shy of seven pounds! Inside are over 2,000 color reproductions of albums plus another 700 12-inch singles covers. And these all fit onto 300 pages – plus another 60 of text – short essays or interviews about some of the labels. Yes, at least � the pages have as many as 16 covers displayed on a page, but I can’t imagine the size, weight and cost if the authors printed all the covers full size. (Another option, of course, would be to include a CD-ROM in back with images of all the covers so you could enlarge them on your PC.). This is one heck of a collection.
The front covers – and in a few cases, the back covers are included – are arranged by Album catalog number (which incidentally are referred to as Matrix Numbers” - Matrix numbers are used to identify the specific take and scratched into the record just outside the label). That number and the year of release are shown for every label but titles are listed only for the covers shown full size. There are some nice examples of gatefold covers which are printed across two pages.
I’m not an expert on the Disco field – though there are obviously some in my collection – so I’m sure some titles are missing here, but my guess is not many. I was surprised to even see four or five pages of Disco records on the folk/jazz Vanguard label.
I see that a few other reviewers (purists) have noted that there are some images with a “cut-out” corner removed or still in their shrink wrap but I don’t remember seeing any of those in the full-size images. They are nearly all in the small 3x3 inch images and, honestly, they aren’t large enough to worry about. But then, I’m not a purest.
Yes, the book is not inexpensive, but for its size and the quality of the print work (It’s from D.A.P., an art publisher, I’ve reviewed in the past) and it’s (probable) small press run, I think it’s a good value to the specialist collector. And, it serves the additional purpose of flattening out your warped vinyl Lps by leaving them under the book for 24 hours.

Buyer's Remorse

When they say you're getting an encyclopedia, they're exactly right. The covers are grouped by label and then by catalog number within each label. The book could have benefited from better organization, perhaps around themes: sex, abstract "art," popstars going disco, gay/homoerotic, dancefloor scenes, etc. As it is, this is essentially a (very nice) printout of Discogs pages. It's not really a book you could flip through and enjoy more than once or twice.
On the plus side, there are some interesting interviews from major players in the disco industry, and some great ads and other miscellany too. The book is beautifully designed and constructed. Still, for the price, and for the editors' taking a subject that could have had a lot of sizzle and making it dry instead, I'm feeling buyer's remorse about this purchase.
